Damn Slooooowwww !! Compaq CQ61 [SOLVED]
« on: May 06, 2011, 03:41:46 PM »
I have a HP Compaq CQ61, Intel® Core™2 Duo T6500, 3GB DDR2, NVIDIA GeForce G 103M , 320GB SATA, and it's getting slower and slower, and slower !
How can i debug it ?
I lost my desktop effects in one of the Synaptic updates, i had some graphical bugs mostly with flash apps that i fixed one or two weeks ago, and now it's getting worse everyday ! This computer is used to work and i'm getting stressed with all this problems !  ???

are you completely updated?

what video driver are you using?

the video card, is that the exact model, 103m?

what kernel are you using?

about getting slower, how old is the machine?

since it is a laptop, have you done any maintenance to the unit?

it could be overheating, dust in the heatsink and fan

about the desktop effects, compiz or kde desktop effects?

are you using oxygen or qtcurve in kde?

what desktop are you using

i am making alot of questions because you didn't provided information different to system is slow

No maintenance was done to this laptop and Windows Vista it's working perfectly. No overheating either...
I use KDE4 and now i have all desktop effects turned off.
Since this is laptop is used for professional use, i usually don't like to install too many programs or change too many settings. The only thing that i do frequently it's to update the system via synaptic.

Have you tried running Bleachbit lately? Might be getting a little clogged up if you haven't cleaned up recently, cookies, flash cookies, urlclassifier3.sqlite in mozilla files, thumbnail cache, tmp files, clipboard, recent documents cache etc. can build up significantly. Just a thought.

Thanks  for all your help but it was a lot easier to re-install the OS again and since i have my /home in a different partition, everything was like it was before... I just installed a few programs that were missing and it's ready to go.
Things now are like it should be, a fast OS !
I think something went quite wrong during an update and caused all this trouble.

Thanks.

You may want to make sure your synaptic is set up well (good repo etc.)  Also a big update after waiting too long sometimes breaks things and in those cases a fresh install with latest iso is best.
