On my desktop, Clementine throws this error and I do not hear any sound.
VLC is able to play fine.

How do I go about researching this issue and find a solution?

-SS.

NOTE: I have recently added a sound card as the on-board sound went kaput. The sound card is identified as some C-Media unit. Here is my 'lspci' output:

I don't see your error, only your lspci output.
Just downloaded clementine and audio works ok for me with Intel sound chip.

This may help, open Clementine:
Goto tools, prefernec, playback.

The last section Gstreamer audio engine chooses which device to channer audio down.
I tried them all, and could get audio with all engines except two:
ALSA audio sink
Apple Airport Audio Sink

Change these settings, if still no audio, open a terminal, start clementine and post
the error message.

Make sure it is disabled in BIOS so sound apps do not try to use it.

If using Pulse Audio, check the Configuration page ......  if the on-board shows there then change it to "Off".

Also if there is an Audio Capability in your video --- HDMI for instance -- then the app may be trying to use this for its output.

Also: what file format are you trying to play in Clementine? May need another Gstreamer plugin to play certain types.  VLC has it's own de-muxers. I had to add ffmpeg and faad plugins to play all my media files in Clementine, and neon for streaming internet radio.
This aggression will not stand man.

People, thanks for your suggestions.
I got it to work by changing Tools > Preferences > Playback > GStreamer audio engine from 'Choose automatically' to 'SDL audio sink'
Although I have no idea what it means or does, for the time being I am able to listen to my songs.
They are mostly .mp3s encoded from Audio CDs.
Thanks again.

Worked for me too in new install of 64 bit 2013.04. Now to check and see if the Firefox magnet link for torrents still needs tweaking.
