Just stepping in to say that with Nvidia 8600GT card I have been through all of the kernel, driver and flash upgrades without a single hiccup.  I use the BFS kernel and wonder, before throwing the 270 driver under the bus, have you tried avoiding pae and a64 with any success?
Actually, I am glad you suggest this, as this was one thing I wanted to try - and got away from somehow. I shall go and do that right now.

No, no dice...
But thinking about it... I'd not expect it to work: My system worked fine with 260 driver + 38 kernel before. Having followed JohnW_75's advice and reinstalled the 260 driver, it still does not work - i.e. what was working before, no longer work after the update. This is unlike other's who have done this, so once again, I am the odd one out.
(I should be sobbing but actually, it makes me laugh, in an 'of course, what else...' sense.)

Cheers!
CJ

What I would really like to see in this thread is someone - anyone - who is using the 270 driver with a 38 kernel (possibly a pae or a64 version) - and even the latest Flash plugin - and it works!

Here's a few for ya:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Worked perfectly for me. After reboot (KDE with 2.6.38.pclos1.pae kernel)
checked out video, audio, played a round of Supertuxkart.

No issues found up to this point.

Working fine on a GeForce GTS  250 videocard.
The latest Nvidia drivers needs a system reboot.

JohnW57
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not using Compiz, KDE effects appear to work OK, no problems here for the
stuff I do.

davecs
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Plays fine with GeforceG105M
No issues at all.
Way to go.

Re-install the kernel-devel package for the kernel your are trying to boot. THEN check /usr/src/linux is symlinked to the same kernel name you are trying to boot. It all has to match. Once you have it properly set then remove and re-install the 2 video driver packages and make sure dkms completes the transaction without failing. You might want to consider moving to a static rather than dynamic distribution considering the level of issues you seem to be having.

Did that, all checks out, but it still fails during install (synaptic, as quoted initially).

Thought have crossed my mind, but one is naturally reluctant to throw out the baby with the bath water...
Also, using fairly fresh H/W so need the newer stuff; some risk is to be expected and accepted.

I say, waste no more time on me: I shall try to do a re-install with 2010 iso, do a full upgrade and see what happens.

Cheers!

Especially happy with this one, as one of my other machines uses this card, and I feel better about updating it. Cheers for that!

For what it's worth, I just updated two of my other machines and all went without a hitch, well done!
(One, with a 6100 card, still have the Flash artefacts.)
Got my father - he's at a different location - to do a full update too, again without a hitch.
I can only assume that my main machine have the hump with something.

Cheers!

As a matter of record: I did a fresh 2010.12 install -> full upgrade -> installed latest kernel (38.4); so far, no issues, so I am also now in a position to confirm that the latest kernel and nvidia driver do work well together.

Cheers!
