I think you try one more thing, i can see a problem on mine, the desktop appeared this morning but i couldn't click on anything, anyway the console gave a error

kde_greet[3409]:Data directory "/var/lib/kdm" not accessible:no such file or directory

well that can't be good... maybe reinstall kdm me thinks...
