[SOLVED] Cannot send file to trash.
« on: April 30, 2011, 06:31:44 PM »
I am trying to send something to the trash. I got this warning.
There is nothing in my trash.  I emptied it a few days ago.

Is it by chance a BIG file? (Bigger then the max. setting for your trashcan).
Try right click the file and 'delete' it instead of sending it to the trashcan might be the answer.

No, just a teeny little annoyance to get rid of.  ;)  I have no trouble deleting files.

Open bleachbit, set it to clean trash only, click Preview on the toolbar and see if anything is found.

Odd that there's nothing there, and that it's reported as 'limit reached.' Hmm...... try increasing trash size to 20%.

My "spidy" instinct tells me that she is trying to delete a file that is larger than she thinks.

I could be wrong. Probably so but,

ms_meme, could you show us the file's size just to rule this out?

Hello ms_meme,

I'm not a desktop expert, mostly I use CLI, and I can be wrong here, but look like the Location of trash-bin is not correct, as it say is in "/" folder  ???
I think it' should be in /home/<user>/Desktop.

Or may be, you are trying to use the root's trash-bin instead of your own user trash-bin ?

As side note, ms_meme, you can delete a file without moving it to trash-bin, by pressing SHIFT-KEY, right clicking on the file and choosing "delete",
in this latter case the deleted file can't be recovered.

Going through the suggestions:
smileeb: It doesn't seem to be just a matter of that one file. But I will rename to check if it will delete. (Hope it doesn't work or I will have to rename every file I have if I want it to go to trash.  ;D )

Rudge: My file is less than 10 KiB. I have also tried different file types and sizes.

Neal: Increased to 20%.  No change.  When I R click on the desktop trash image for that menu, the EMPTY TRASH is grayed out.

AS: This is where I got the picture: I clicked on the Trash icon (either on desktop or the Places Panel) and opened the trash. Then I right clicked and saw the Properties. Here is what I see under Permissions.

I have no problem with deleting from the Right click menu....but have more than once thankfully retrieved a trashed file.

Check the properties on your trash. Is it owned by you or root?

as per screenshoot: owner is "meme", group is "meme". Are you logged in as "meme" ?
