Virtualbox versions, can't get update (Solved)
« on: April 30, 2011, 09:14:26 AM »
I have read the other posts to this problem and followed the solutions given. all done in synaptic.

installed new getvirtualbox, which unistalled current version 3.2.12. restarted box and used the get virtualbox script in the menu. It again installed 3.2.1.2. I did this several times with the same results. At no time does the script or the virtualbox in synaptic give the new 4.04 version as being avaliable. I have tried with several mirror sites. synaptic shows fully updated system. Don't know what to try next but have version 3.2.12 back and running. Ken

The script, getvirtualbox installs the version it is scripted to install. It does not auto-update itself any time a new version of vbox is announced. It has to be "manually" updated, i.e. the script needs to be edited to install the newer version.

If a new vbox version is available, you can put in an update request in the Package Suggest section. Be sure to read and follow all of the rules posted in the Package Suggest section.

I would suggest completely uninstalling your current getvirtualbox then restart your desktop, open Synaptic again and do a refresh and then install getvirtualbox again.

The new getvirtualbox should then install Virtualbox 4.0.4 (or possibly 4.0.6)

Note - before reinstalling getvirtualbox, you may want to edit your main KMenu and check to see if the getvirtualbox entry is still there - if it is you could delete it (that should remove any possibility of the wrong script being re-used)

Thanks menotu, I will give that a try and see what happens. Making sure the old entry is deleted out of the menu is a good idea and may very well be my proplem. Ken

[root@localhost ken]# apt-get remove virtualbox
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Package virtualbox is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 removed and 0 not upgraded.
[root@localhost ken]#

synaptic also shows no virtualbox installed, but I have virtualbox in the menu and it works fine, just version 3.2.12. With no virtualbox pkgs marked in synaptic, I just marked getvirtualbox as "mark for installation" and applied. I now have it as marked installed but for verssion 3212, with no other boxed marked. I can't uninstall VB if it tells me it is not installed.

getvirtualbox is now at the current version 4.0.6. Installation of getvirtualbox 4.0.6 removes the old 3.x series of virtualbox except for 2 driver packages:

x11-driver-input-vboxmouse-3.2.12-1pclos2010.i586.rpm and x11-driver-video-vboxvideo-3.2.12-1pclos2010.i586.rpm respectively.

In fact these are the only two pld virtualbox packages that remain in the repository.

Once you install getvirtualbox 4.0.6 you need to run the script by clicking on the getvirtualbox icon in the menu. This will connect to virtualbox.com, download and install Virituabox 4.0.6. After that you should reboot so the kernel can load the proper drivers. Once booted you should have a menu entry for Virtualbox and clicking on it will open Virtualbox 4.0.6.

Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox for Linux installation...........
VirtualBox Version 4.0.6 r71344 (2011-04-21T11:07:44Z) installer

You appear to have a version of VirtualBox on your system which was installed
from a different source or using a different type of installer (or a damaged
installation of VirtualBox).  We strongly recommend that you remove it before
installing this version of VirtualBox.

Do you wish to continue anyway? [yes or no]

Cancelling installation.

Well I got this far as above shows, I have the new install script but it will not install vb. the old version was installed using synaptic and it now show no installtion. remove in terminal tells that no virttualbox is installed.

As a side note, my synaptic now looks different. The boxes that are installed are green but now all empty boxes have a star in them where they did    not before. Not sure where to go from here. Is this a problem with synaptic or something else. Ken

As near as I can tell I have a synaptic problem, don't know for sure but here is what I have.

1. could not install new version 4 of vb because it says that I have a previous version. with synaptic on the heanet mirror all that shows for virtualbox is the getvirtualbox and the two drivers. this is the new version 4 script.

2. I had to go back to the spout.ussg.indiana mirror and it shows all the virtualbox pkgs but they are all version 3.2.12, even the getvirtualbox one. by this time I did not have any working VB so I installed all the pkgs using this mirror and then had a working vb version 3.2.12. I then completely removed them all using synapitic and the spout mirror. With no vb showing installed and no vb  in the menu, I went back to the heanet mirror which only shows the new versison 4 getvirtualbox and installed that. rebooted machine and ran script from menu, but as above will not install due to old version being present.

So as of now I have a working version 3.2.12 with no way to get rid of it and install the newer version. I don't know why the difference in the mirrors.

Have you updated your sources.list from the post listed at the top of this forum page?

yes I've udated the sources list already. tried several other things since last post but no luck. I'm back to an installed 3.2.12 version and I went back to the heanet mirror and it shows all installed. I have tried to completely uninstall from here to get rid of everything and then start over with the new install script but it won't install due to the old version still being there even if it is not shown. When getvirtualbox is installed it removes serveral pkgs and vb is no longer in the menu. This seems to be what should happen. Then reboot box and run the script from menu and fails due to previous verrsion or it says a different installer used and it need to be deleted first. At this point there is nothing to delete using synaptic or the terminal as the above post shows no pkgs to delete and the cycle starts over.

The only thing I can see that is different is the versison 3.2.12 was installed from synaptic and not the getvirtualox script. I'm at a loss and have spent last 3hrs trying to remove and install this in everyway possible I can think of with no luck.

When the installer asks if you want to proceed anyway... choose yes!

How do I do that. I've tried y and enter, yes and enter, nothing seems to make it continue. I had at first figured that would fix it but don't know make it continue, old-polack. I posted above the screen that stops the install. The way to continue would make my day.  :D thanks

Thanks old-polack, your the best. I thought about what you said and what I had tried. So I went to the terminal and logged in as root and ran the getvirtualbox. When it stopped, I was able to continue in the terminal. Will post as sollved. thanks.
