(SOLVED) Where do I get driver for a Brother printer?
« on: April 30, 2011, 05:51:59 AM »
I've just installed LXDE on my ex's computer. All has gone fine - but I have one concern. She has a relatively recent Brother printer - DCP-770CW. I've never had to install a Brother in Linux - I've always used HP or Epson. Some people on this forum have downloaded drivers from the Brother site and seem to have had success with them. I've always stuck rigidly to the dictum about installing nothing that is not in the repos - so is it OK to use the drivers from their site? The other question is - I see in the repo there is in fact a package - 'task-printing-misc' which claims to have drivers for a large variety of printers, including Brother. Obviously it would be great if this does the trick. Anybody know the answer to this?

(Edit) I should point out that although the install is complete I don't have access to the printer yet - hence my not having tried to install via the PCC etc.

I don't use LXDE but doesn't it have Configure Your Computer, PCC? Have you already tried  PCC, Hardware, Configure Printers and Scanners?

Ray - yes, I would have done all that including installing 'task-printing-misc' had I got the printer here with me! I suppose I should have made that clear in my post. In fact I'll probably edit it to do so. The printer is with my ex and although I've got her computer here and have done the install on it, I won't have access to the printer till I take the computer to hers.

For what it is worth,

I installed "task-printing-misc" yesterday to install a brother printer.  After the "task-printing-misc" program was installed, I manually started cups server, then accessed cups at "http://localhost:631", clicked on Add Printer, and it showed the brother printer in the top section of "Local Printers".  The printer was connected by usb.

You will have to have the printer connected to the computer for it to be this easy though.

It was a piece of cake.

Actually, it is really no more difficult for a network printer.
