Black cat astronomy edition.
« on: April 29, 2011, 09:34:59 AM »
Is this remaster still alive?

With spring finally here, I'm setting up astronomy hardware, and was going to load the blackcat into a dedicated laptop.

This one has a real rs-232 port to check out the indi stuff.

Any remasters you want me to test on various equipment. scopes imagers, etc, throw them my way.
Thanks

I have it on my laptop and it is working great.

Hi,
Glad to hear it's still working well!  I am in the process of updating and modifying the ISO but things are at treacle speed on my hardware.  Nothing too dramatic - more cosmetic than anything.  Feel free to throw any suggestions into the pot.  Also looking forward to how the indi stuff works out.
Total update should only be about 300mb.  Was on mine - bit of a relief.  Hadn't played with it for a bit.

The dropbox URL http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18945176/blackcat.iso gives a 404 error. Did you pull the original iso while working on the new remaster?

Sorry, I removed the ISO that was over CD size.  What you want is http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18945176/BlackCatmini.iso.  That one fits on a CD and is the one I am currently reworking.  That was posted at http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,85914.msg714477.html#msg714477.  Bit of a while ago.  I then included the Gimp and a couple of other things.  Currently I am putting Firefox back in due to its footprint, and trying to work out how to squeeze Lyx in.  Kind of seems appropriate - not sure what others think.

No problem. I appreciate you providing the new link. And, Lynx does seem like a good addition.

Ahh - do you mean Lynx as the browser, or Lyx, the WYSIWYM word processor?  I meant the later - it is a word processor that works like a behind-the-scene editor.  A bit like using HTML to do a webpage - you lay it out and then view the finished product in a browser.  Although it's not quite like that - I'm digging myself a hole here, aren't I!!  Have a look at it, it is in Synaptic.  It allows the easy use of mathematical and scientific symbols and equations in a document.  I just thought it might fit in with the general "sciencey" feel of the remaster.  Maybe there is an alternative - its dependencies are a bit hefty.

Yeah, I did mean the browser. I thought "Lyx" was a typo. My bad. I may have a look at it later, but I'm trying to get up to speed on Scribus, along with a couple other projects. The Synaptic description makes Lyx sound like a subset of LaTeX in a GUI. Is that an accurate description?

Yes, I would say that is a fair description.  I am still trying to get the hang of it, but it's not too alien as I am used to doing web pages the "hard" way!  Just got to work out how to squeeze 75mb in - bit of a challenge.

two words: docs..and..icons :D :D

Astronomy edition, how cool is that? I've got to check it out, been dying to buy myself some whizzbang or another that would let me connect my camera to a telescope, a few mornings back, we had 6 planets almost lined up close to where the sun rises, 4 were visible to the naked eye, though I had to squint a bit to see 'em ;)
This aggression will not stand man.
