music cd's no go(solved for now)
« on: April 26, 2011, 11:24:50 AM »
Hello,
I seem to have lost the ability to play music cd's in KsCD or Amarok.I can insert the cd's but neither will play be it in my dvd or cd drive.I have however found they will play in VLC media player. It seems strange that both music players I prefer seem to no longer function.Has anyone else encountered this problem and is there a fix.

i don't have optical drives atm but i remember that i could configure kscd to search fro the drive on a exact path

amarok has its own way to do this, vlc too

you could verify where vlc searches for the drive and use those settings on the other two

KsCD and Amarok are KDE programs while VLC isn't. Did you reboot after the last update? If not, do so and try again.

If you did, hmmm, would you have to make them search the disk or add the drive? When you insert a disk, does the device manager popup offering choices?
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

Hello,
How do I verify where vlc drive path is and then apply it to KsCD and Amarok please?
I rebooted but the problem is still there. The device manager does pop up when I insert the disc with choices, including both applications in question. However the only button in KsCD that does anything is the eject. It did however spit this out when it crashed "Executable: kscd PID: 8995 Signal: Segmentation fault (11)"There doesn't appear to be any configuration choices other than eject when finished and appearance settings.
In Amarok the disc just sits there and I have no idea where to start with the settings. It shows the tracks but clicking on the play button does nothing.
As far as I remember KsCD started by default when one inserted a music cd or at least used to which was handy if you where busy doing something.I found Amarok good for playing music tracks I have actually on my hard drive which it still does well.Thanks.

Hello,
I tried reinstalling them both including kdemultimedia4 followed by a reboot but the problem persists.

I have had no luck with KsCD in KDE4. Look through the 3 pages of:

I have used Xmms for along time and still use in KDE4.

Hello,
From old_guy's reply the link seems to indicate there is a problem  at a basic level with the two K applications in question. It is strange how one gets comfortable with certain applications over time.I suppose that is the thing about linux in general that there are always alternatives.
I guess it is a case of waiting for fixes to KsCD and Amarok or using something different
Thanks for the replies guys.
