<Solved--with thanks to all>Printing to a Canon
« on: April 27, 2011, 05:32:18 AM »
Hi to all knowledgeable people.
I had a Canon Pixma IP 3000 which has worked well for 5 years. having done major upgrades including to testing although the problems seems to be in non-testing as well.
Any way, I was doing some dual sided printing when the printer stopped.
Nothing I did re-activated the printer. So I decomissioned it. It could be found and setup. but did not print out.
Bought a Canon 4850, which I see is supproted by CUPS, but although the printer is detected and setup, nothing prints out and the printer does not appear to be activated.
Just like the IP 3000.
I have tried the printer on a few different versions of Linux, but it still has the same problems.
Has the support for Canon gone???
I am pulling my hair out trying to get either of these printers working as I need some dual sided printing done.
Your thoughts, as allways, greatfully received.

I didn't try this printer the last months...
=> if I have some time this week, I'll test the Pixma IP3000 again...

If someone else is faster.... => I'll check this thread again

OK!!!
I have tested the printer( Canon IP 300 ) using W$XP and it works fine.
I have tested the other printer (Canon IP 4580 ) using W$7-64 and it works fine.
PClinuxOS does not now work with either of these printers!!
Unless, of course, someone knows better.
In which case, perhaps, they could share their knowledge with me.

Duno why you go through this but you can find both Linux drivers from Canon here:
http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/?personal

Use for the iP4580 the iP4500 driver.  They are easy to install. That "should" work  ;) I have used their drivers for a iP1980 (the iP1900 series driver) with great success. You need the rpm stuff. Worth a try?

You can't really expect to use anything from testing with a production system. You should be on the testers mailing list and using a disposable installation. If you know that the problem exists in a completely non-testing environment, you should only post the details about that, so that someone can help. The only thing that I can think of is that you should unselect that testing section in synaptic, uninstall everything printing related, then re-install the printer related programs.

Gezza,

I too have a Canon PiXMA IP 3000.  I can say that it has and
continues to work without issue with fully updated PCLinuxOS.

That said, I do however use the TurboPrint driver package.

It is for-pay software and works a treat for me. Integrates
with GIMP and has a very windows-ish control panels for complete
colour control, head alignment, head cleaning and sensing of
ink levels.

You can get a version at no cost that will print at low resolutions
(watermarks at higher resolutions) to see if it works for you.

I highly recommend them.
