the 18 partition disk, has been partitioned using PCLinuxOS or some other distro ?
Do not know if there exist some partition no. limits in PCLinuxOS ...

Edit (removed previous post about ext2/ext4, misunderstood the target)

Back in kde, Zen did not shut down properly on exit, ctl+alr,PrtScr,B did not work this time, used reset.

1.. Install twice, hmm belts and braces  ;D ok
2.. drakelive-install oh, have seen that before
3.. sda2 I don't believe it has ever been formatted ext2, today it has been done ext4 twice I think, it stays that way  ;D
I like mke2fs -t -L minime2010 /dev/sda2  (that is from memory not my record)

4.. these partitions have all been done either by KDE or MiniMe (the lost one)
I happen to be one of those getting stuck in the new fdisk that was introduced without fanfare, the partition limit is not quite astronomical now but far exeeds the combined numbers of old-polack and myself.  I am sorry I don't remember what thread of mine, where old-polack went into details about major and minor numbers, I certainly had forgotten that about 16 or 32 could be problematic, no longer.

But my two hard disks are formatted using both old fdisk and new fdisk.  Look at fdik for /sdb and the first line shows 2048 and for my /sda you would see 63. Thanks for asking about the formatting as I had forgotten about this slight difference

Hmmm, what next?  I have done it twice ;)

Ok, I removed the e in drake and I am away, as well whilde I don't like it, I have let the install do a format to ext4, and I think that will cost me the LABEL but I wil trade that for the lovely trace I see in konsole.

Oops what is going on here, now that is another jaw dropper:

Well the comment is fair enough as sdb18 is not formatted, spare partition waiting to be used. I hope it is just draklive-install finding the partition and commenting upon the status, ie I can ignore that

When using the -t option, (stands for type) you need to specify what type.

From the man page:

-t fs-type
Specify the filesystem type (i.e., ext2, ext3, ext4, etc.) that is to be created.
Old-Polack

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Have set pc running memtest86+ while I go to bed for the night.

Edit:
Ran for about 8 hours no sign of problems.

Presently running from a KDE re-master not long ago, actually looks just the work horse only the DVD drive starting up when new action required reminds me.

I have just done a root konsole draklive-install to /dev/sda2  letting install process format to ext4 below it the output from konsole (have edited out a lot lines with ...socket ignored

 :'( :'( :'(
Finally got my older pc with Linux systems running, ooooh does it seem slow after this pc. terrible experience as the minime LiveCD would not adjust the widescreen to size, not sure what that was about but was not interested it the problem I just battled through via konsole. Found an empty ext3 formatted partition and did the draklive-install process, from the latest minime LiveCD I have, this time it worked.  GRUB screens came up a the end.

Now I know what the root konsole record is like in general for a successful draklive-install. I have left a few extra konsole lines here as well

Code: [Select]
[root@localhost guest]# mount

none on /dev/pts type devpts (rw)

Now I may be onto something. When I am in my KDE and go to konsole, call grub and type root notice how the start point has moved down two lines, below is exactly as seen in konsole. sorry can't do pictures as I don't know how to get dropbox links, I have a dropbox account but not figured how to get links yet.

Code: [Select]
GNU GRUB  version 0.97  (640K lower / 3072K upper memory)

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.  For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions.  Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
   completions of a device/filename. ]

grub>
      root

When I called grub from ordinary user konsole, I saw a quick flash of something else, which would have been following:

Code: [Select]
[gert@localhost ~]$ grub
Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time.

I also ran minime LiveCD to repeat above, as I did not like the two extra lines hopping in when calling GRUB. I was a bit more adventurous here so there are a few more lines. Testing the auto completion using the TAB key, or perhaps "help suggester"

Code: [Select]
grub> root
(fd0): Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x0

grub> root hd

Error 11: Unrecognized device string

grub> root (hd
 Possible disks are:  hd0 hd1 hd2

grub> root (hd0,1)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83

grub>

The second command shows how GRUB helps suggesting if the parameter is not completed.  In this case shows how many hard drives could be used.

My KDE konsole finds only one drive (hd0,0)

My menu.lst presently shows:

The red sections have trouble, at least will stop with presenting text login, ie video gone, startx will fail and video not recognised

The green sections will allow login and likely respond to startx (to my surprise)

Pfeeeew, need time out considering what is best next step.  Suggestions welcome   ;D

A bit of searching and found old-polack post here
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,62786.msg508062.html#msg508062

Using a Gnome OS, konsole and re-installed Grub

Quote
GNU GRUB  version 0.97  (640K lower / 3072K upper memory)

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.  For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions.  Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
   completions of a device/filename. ]

grub> find /boot/grub/stage2
 (hd0,1)  (hd0,2)  (hd0,6)  (hd0,7)  (hd0,8)  (hd0,9)  (hd0,10)  (hd0,11)   (hd0,12)  (hd1,6)  (hd1,8)   (hd1,11)  (hd1,12)  (hd1,13)

grub> root (hd0,2)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83

grub> setup (hd0)
 Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
 Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
 Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"...  17 sectors are embedded.
succeeded
 Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+17 p (hd0,2)/boot/grub/stage2
/boot/grub/menu.lst"... succeeded
Done.

grub> quit

But this did not fix the offset in the konsole I use in KDE, however using another widget konsole I find the offset is not there. Wild goose chase I think.

Now I soon go looking for a bottle of wine. I have not found anything I can put my finger on. The status is however that after having re-installed GRUB things have brightened up.

1.. Idly wondering to do next I ran my two home made poorman LiveHDD installs and carefully noted the result.

I am presented with text login, which responds to user/password
startx gets video going nicely, all looks working fine
On exit I must use the finger dance ctl+alt,PrtScr,B but it terminates correctly with a restart

2.. Ran the LiveHDD of minime2010.12 latest download I have been using. The LiveHDD was made with Just19 script Alpha-9.  Running the minime LiveHDD was also perfect, so before deciding to shut it down I decided to try to install from this run to the recalcitrant /dev/sda2.

Reformatted /sda2 first ext4, checked partition was empty
From running minime LiveHDD in konsole I used the draklive-install
Installed without letting install routine format partition (uncheck at the right time)
Grub session came up perfectly too

Shutting down the running LiveHDD also terminated perfectly no suspicous or early stopping.

3.. Rebooted pc and used my old stanza for my lost minime and it worked

Presented with the first time login screen asking for details. I am now using the bare minime system right now and will very soon make a remaster for future use.

Next step I will re-install from my remastered minime system with all customisation. (Bit tough for a diehard Opera user having to use Konqueror)

Have you done a full upgrade yet?

Ummmm, no  :-[ I take that your question is more an instruction  ;D

I was also thinking that if my pc/system whatever is stuffing around with me, having the 'bare' install would be safer.

Now it also occurs to me that myliveCD will not be running anyway without some installs.

Ok I wil set it going now.  Thanks, much appreciated the nudge as I am already off on other tracks.

ie the radiotray problem have bothered me for weeks, I just have been unable to get it to run in the old minime I had or in the KDE I have.  I was going to have a bash at it again now early in the minime install but will start my own thread.  Before I have hijacked somebody elses.

Edit:
Ooops, only a few mega bytes the update, already done and I have downloade draklive-install so mylivecd will run.

Shortlived joy. Problem is back again worse, re-installing Grub, does not help.

The problem: I can not make full install from LiveHDD run based on original minime ISO (not yet updated or remastered) this is the iso that formed the base for a LiveHDD install

I use draklive-install from root konsole, filesystem appears to be installed but the Grub session at the end simple vanishes.

Below are the konsole records from two tries, to two different drives, I am not familiar with what should be the result, only that if it succeeds there is a section related to grub activity and they are missing here.

/dev/sdb17 is the partition where the LiveHDD is run from

Code: [Select]

[root@localhost guest]# draklive-install
/media/ user
mount: /dev/sda2 already mounted or /root/.inspect_tmp_dir busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda2 is mounted on /media/minime2010
umount: /union/root/.inspect_tmp_dir: device is busy.
(In some cases useful info about processes that use
the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1))
