{solved} expanded restart options in KDE4 - are there any?
« on: April 23, 2011, 01:25:31 PM »
Not sure what to call this and my Googling something like it doesn't help.

In 2009 with older KDE, my reboot had options for booting to other items in I guess, grub's menu.  I could reboot into windows or my other linux installations.

Now, I have to sit through a reboot and wait for grub and pick.

Do you know what I mean and if so, is there a way for this new shutdown/restart menu to do that?

there is a small line on the left side of the button, press and hold left click, the options will pop up after 2 or 3 seconds

Nish, I know exactly what you mean.

Just like the "Shutdown" option has a little arrow to the right and, when you click and hold the mouse button there, it gives you options like "Hibernate" or "Suspend", you saw all of Grub's menu items when clicking and holding the "Restart" button. This was pretty convenient since I always have Phoenix and LXDE installations on different partitions. I also (sadly) need to boot into Windoze several times a year (tax return and development of Powershell scripts I need for work).

I miss that feature, but never was bothered enough to post about it or google it. Maybe I can find something or another forum member knows more.

It's available on the (normally  orange coloured) restart icon.

Press and hold down for a few seconds - or use the little arrow - and all the grub menu options will appear. Choose the one you want and away you go.

T6, you're right, of course.

What both Nish and I mean is the same kind of action on the "Restart Computer" button, and the options would be Grub's boot menu items.

Now I found the solution (thanks to the OpenSuse forum).

Start "Configure your Desktop", select System Administration => Login Screen and go to the "Shutdown" tab. At the bottom is Boot Manager. Select "Grub", and after restarting KDE its there.

Strange - my Grub was already set, didn't have to manually select it, that's why I posted above to use the Restart icon.

Yeah, it is strange. But ever since using KDE4 I lost this option, even though I reinstalled at least once since then  ???

Well, at least now we know how to fix it  ;)

I must be doing something wrong, mine is set to grub. But after a reboot no more options are available hovering over restart.  Holding down just restarts me again.  I did reselect and apply grub to be sure.  But my button is not looking like T6's to begin with.  Is there something else I have to configure?  I remember seeing some shutdown widget somewhere...hmmm

Nish, on the bottom right you should have the lock/logout widget with the red "shutoff symbol". Click that, it should give you the three options "Log out"/"Restart"/Shutdown". Theres a small arrow visible next to "Shutdown".

Is there also one visible next to "Restart"? If so, then click and hold for 2 to 3 seconds, and see if the boot menu options appear.

Just to make sure - the lock/logout widget on the far right of the panel:

...and the "Restart" option with the arrow:

ctrl+alt+del or right click on desktop-->Leave...

tried that, Leave just logs me out

Just to make sure - the lock/logout widget on the far right of the panel:

I need that widget.  Now to see if I can put it in there without messing up the whole thing.  I am surprisingly good at messing up KDE4 task bar/whathaveyous beyond all repair by doing something like this.  I will try it out on my test partition first until I have a grasp of how to do it with screwing up the whole bar.  thanks

Nish, what coffeetime suggested ("ctrl-alt-del or right-click on dektop-->Leave") should provide exactly the same popup, so the widget I mentioned isn't required for this to work.

I don't want to lure you into doing something that will cause more trouble for you  ;)

I did try coffeetime suggestion and did not get a popup, when I  right click on desktop I get the leave option but choosing it just logs me out.

I have now placed that lockout/logout widget on both this and my test install (YAY)

However, the red icon gives no option to even reboot or shut down, touching it logs me out. (BOO) There is no line next to it

http://www.smqlinux.com/smq/logout.png

:'(  I remember in one of my many forays into KDE4 seeing that line and having options but sadly, no more.  My test install is a default KDE4 (deleted .KDE4 folder after messing too much of the taskbar) and I didn't do much customization there now so it is different from this one.  I can't believe I screwed up both the same way?

UPDATE: after looking at the screenshots of those with the options some more I realized you need to have check options to confirm shutdown.  I normally shut that off first thing because I hate the delay.  I  now must decide if having the reboot options are worth that stupid delay.

And another note, with knowing more terms I was able to Google much more concerning this "feature" however, no posts mentioned keeping the confirm in there.
