Nvidia Geforce GT540M Cuda no devices detected
« on: April 21, 2011, 09:33:11 PM »
Just installed PCLinuxOS LXDE 2010.12 on a new Acer 4750G which uses the Nvidia Geforce GT540M Cuda graphics card.

Although the Nvidia card wasn't supported it was working with the vesa driver.

So I updated to the new kernel kernel-2.6.38.3-pclos1.pae.bfs (8 Gig RAM installed) and rebooted and let it configure itself.

Once it had finished the screen display was squashed to into just the left half of the screen in some interesting psychedelic colors.

Unfortunately my messing around with the configuration has resulted in no longer being able to boot into a graphical desktop and my further attempts to get back to something that works have failed.

Is there a default or recommended xorg.conf file that I could use that will work for at least getting the vesa display working?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Texstar!

That got the vesa display working again. Unfortunately it is now offset too high by about 300 pixels.

I have found that by setting the color resolution to 24bpp improves this, so it is now only offset by about 50 pixels.

The boot splash screen displays perfectly. The display problem seems to be only once X kicks in.

I've played around with almost every resolution but the best result so far is with its native 1366x768.

Also booting with the original PCLINUXOS 2010.12 kernel doesn't seem to make any difference.

The original install was working fine at 1024x768 but I never tested the native resolution before updating everything. However I'd guess the native 1366x768 would have worked as well.

All I need to do now figure out how to move the screen display down a little and I'll be good to go... ;D

You could move your monitor up, just a bit.  ???

LOL I thought of that but how to remove the hinges and not voiding the warrant? Then I realized I could just put the notebook on a stack of books.

However when installing virtualbox it removed the PAE kernel and then after a reboot and automatic kernel rebuild, the screen now is working perfectly with the vesa driver.

So no need for the stack of books.  :)

Just changed the kernel to kernel-2.6.37.4-pclos1.pae which seems to be compatible with Virtualbox.

Unfortunately on boot up, at the graphical login stage, I now only get a blank screen.

Tried do-vesa but this time it hasn't helped. Tried booting with the original kernel and this too ends in a blank screen.

I probably should have only gone with kernel-2.6.33.7-pclos6.pae as everything was already working fine with kernel-2.6.33.7-pclos6

Update: Both kernel-2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs and kernel-2.6.33.7-pclos6.pae do work with the vesa driver for the Acer 4750G, which I assume is using the integrated graphics controller rather than the Nvidia GT540M card at this time.

Hybrid cards switch back an forth depending on usage, problem arises when one of the cards are nor working(in this case the nvidia one),if you can“t disable the nvidia card trough a BIOS a setting, avoid maybe this can help:

I don't have a similar card ,so i haven't tested it myself ,also i  know is its for another distro but maybe it can adapted/converted.

have a look a this:
