Mouse freezes around 50 secs at KDM
« on: April 19, 2011, 07:17:01 AM »
Hello room, I am trying to install PCLOS to a friends PC. She love it but there is a annoying issue: Mouse freezes for almost a min at KDM. She has a Nvidia GTS 250, dual core processor, 2GB RAM and 1 SATA Terabyte HD. I have made 3 partitions:
/ (21GB)
/home (978GB)
/swap (1GB)
Here are the steps I follow:
1) Install PCLOS 2010.12
2) Edit sources.list and add the file posted here http://distro.ibiblio.org/pclinuxos/synaptic/sources.list (automated method gives me "Failed" to get the repos)
3) update system.

Yesterday I have been around 4hours to install PCLOS and I wasnt successful, during aplying changes (installing updates) it took more than 1 and half hour, thats crazy because it takes 15 mins into my box (less powerfull than my friends box). As an example it says "installing XSANE interface" or something took 10 mins!.
Since rebooted the PC during the update because it got stuck, it was a mess after reboot so I had to re install the CD. I let the PC ready to update today. The question is: If mouse freezes for a minute at KDM could be the Nvidia GTS 250 GPU drivers the problem? laest drivers seem to be a little bit "conflictive" with kernel 2.6.35 and up. I got an older 8400GS and sometimes I get a rubish screen (pixelated or distorted) during flash playback. Or and ACPI issue at startup?

I Hope to be success today, she likes PCLOS.

thanks

about swap, and because it appears there is a lot of space, I would suggest something like 3 Gb, otherwise the "hibernate" feature will be unavailable,
about home, it's fine, but may be you want to leave some spare space for future needs (you never know ...) say 100 Gb ...

so far so good.

look like there is nothing strange, if you update your computer regularly, you have to apply only the latest, in the case of the new installation you need to apply all the updates, and right now should be something like 500 Mb.

Altough you say your computer is less powerful, may be you have a faster hard disks ... no info here to understand what's really is going on.

Since rebooted the PC during the update because it got stuck,

At very first reboot after installation there is a phase of hardware detection, it normally took much more time then usual boot,
but it's only at first boot. Also, it has been reported that on some hardware (not clearly identified) this times are much longer than usual...

it was a mess after reboot so I had to re install the CD.

saying "it was a mess" doesn't help to identify any problem, and therefore no one can offer a solution about.

and where come from this 2.6.35 kernel ? I'm not aware of a 2.6.35 kernel shipped with PCLinuxOS.

The "ghosted images" and distortion on screen are a know problem of flash-players, you should direct your complains to Adobe directly about that,
however it's available in PCLinuxOS repo an earlier version of flash-player (10.1) that appear to work correctly, so you can simply downgrade
flash-player and solve the ghosted image problem. About mouse, may be you want to provide some more info ...

Be patient, analyze the problem as much as you can, ask for help (and provide as much related info as possible), and you will surely succeed!  ;)

Thanks for your detailed reply  ;D

When I say "Since rebooted the PC during the update because it got stuck," I meant the following:
after reboot there was a white login window with big letters "localhostdomain" I tried to type the user name and pass and nothing happened (also mouse pointer freezes), of course I am aware of a potential problems if I interrupt an update or software installation.

About aplying changes (updating) I can tell you that my PC: mobo Asus M2N SLI - AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ 2400Mhz - 2GB RAM DDR2 667 - GPU: Nvidia Gforce 8400GS 512MB - HD WD 250 GB - Monitor: LG Flatron 1953S 19" is pretty fast and you are right the total amount of updates till today are about 582MB.

About kernel 2.6.35 I meant about other distros and the "famous" black screen after installing NVIDIA proprietary drivers.

Sorry for not giving detailed info such logs but since my friends lives about 30 mins from home its a little hard to get that info and post it here right now, at 6pm (Argentine time) I wll try to enter the forum and post much more detailed info about the issue with her mouse.

thank you very much once again, I know I will succeed installing PCLOS  ;D

Well PCLOS is successfully installed  ;D It took 2 and half hours to apply 468 updates but finally worked fine, the only problem was LibreOffice because I had to try many times to get it finally installed. So... another one PCLOS user. I think that big HD's make installations to take really long times.
Results:
Installation: OK
Mouse freezing: NO
User: Happy  ;D
