as root, su - user = bad passwd
« on: April 19, 2011, 12:13:19 AM »
Greetings;

Here is something I don't recall running into before.

I run amanda as my backup and have been for about 13 years now.

But with this new re-install, I can't do anything as the user amanda, via the su or su - command syntax, gets a "bad passwd" return.  I have never before even set a passwd for amanda, and I have now tried both a * and an x in that position of the passwd file without effecting this error.

Note, this is the same passwd, group and shadow files from the previously working install.

What should I do next?

Thanks & Cheers, Gene

Greetings;

Never mind, I recopied those files again, and its working now.  There were some diffs in sizes.

Thanks, sorry for the noise.  Cheers, Gene

Well that's good. There's nothing more unsettling when a restore doesn't stick or the worry that think it mightn't and you don't know why. Glad you figured it out.  :)

Yup.  Now, had they been identical, but replacing them worked, I'd be a little longer yet before I needed a haircut. :)

Thanks & Cheers, Gene
