Problems with no sound while browsing internet
« on: April 18, 2011, 11:27:09 PM »
...like on YouTube - - I hear sounds while using the desktop but not while surfing the internet?

I'm using:

PCLinuxOS Gnome 2010.10, Build: 2010/10/26
Kernel: 2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs
Gnome: 2.32.1

Firefox:3.6.13
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13)
Gecko/20101209
PCLinuxOS/1.9.2.13-1pclos2010 (2010)

Opera v11.10 2092 i386
i686, 2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs

SeaMonkey 2.0.11,
Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US;
rv:1.9.1.16) Gecko/20101209
PCLinuxOS/2.0.11-1pclos2010 SeaMonkey/2.0.11

Chromium v9.0.570.1 (64589)

(I used several different web browsers to find out if it's just one or more or all with the problem)

VMware Player version 3.1.4 build-385536.

The sound card is "connected" to the VM and, as I mentioned above, I do hear sounds through
the desktop, just not while browsing the internet!?  I've turned the volumes ALL the way up on
everything (desktop, YouTube, etc) to no avail!?

Is there something I'm missing here?

Thanks,
QBall

To be clear, are you trying to get sound in a VM? Do you have sound in a real OS? what OS are you running the VM in?

Yes, I'm trying to get sound inside the browsing, inside the VM ... the VM itself has sound (I can hear videos, inside the VM) just not while visiting places like YouTube. The host is Windows 7 Home Edition Premium, sorry I should have stated that in my original message...I just didn't think that it had any bearing on the problem?

I have a Nvidia MB:
Nvidia nForce 430 [MCP61] High Definition Audio

Sound works in host, works in vm ... just not while browsing the internet.

I don't know if I have a hdmi port, all sounds work except as stated.

If you haven't already tried it, try running the browser from a fresh restart without trying the desktop sound apps etc; I was thinking maybe the sound is being "held" by something else and not releasing it to your browser.

Do the browsers have add-ons enabled - mebbe try starting with them disabled to rule them out of the mix
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sorry...I had other problems pop up with it so I deleted that one, it was PCLOS 2010.12 --- don't know what the problem was, it was deleted in July 2010 when I moved on to other projects, so I never did find out what the problem(s) was/were! I had sound in the main OS (Windows 7 64-bit) and sound in the vm itself, just not while browsing internet sites like youtube (or any other that had a flash video / sound)...the videos played alright, just no sound? :(  Oh, well - - - I may try "re-installing" that version of PCLOS in a vm to see if I can recreate the problem (I still have the settings file for that "install")?

Thanks y'all for trying to help! :)
