Scanner not recognised, epson dx4450
« on: April 15, 2011, 05:59:26 AM »
I have posted a previous problem with this heap of doggy-do, but this is now a different snafu - can't get my epson DX4450 printer / copier / "scanner" to work as a scanner. Not going to throw it away, just bought about five years' supply of inks. sane doesn't recognise it, won't work with gimp or openoffice-draw - any ideas anyone please? Pclinuxos 2010-10 regularly updated, Gnome, AMD64, that's about the extent of my knowledge of this box o' tricks.
PCLinuxOS, Gnome, LXDE; AMD Dual Core Processor 4850B ‎512 KB ‎2500 MHz; Seagate 500418AS; FreeAgentDesktop external drive; PHILIPS DVDR1628P1; GeForce 6150SE nForce 430; HP Photosmart. PASS April 2012. Still learnin' Linux. If I have offended, please note: I am a professor of dontopedalogy.

After 32 people looked at this I guess you are stuck with me.  I suggested you do this before.

Did you try to install the scanner from PCC>hardware?  There is one list called EPSON and then below that is another called EPSON CORP. There is no DX4450 (your other post said it was a 4550 I think and there is none of those either) but under EPSON CORP is the DX3850. You could try that or something else that strikes your fancy of some sort of similarity.  My Epson NX420 happily scans as an Epson PID 0864 flatbed scanner (go figure). I have no idea why my the OS assigned that to it becasue I told it to use something else once (which worked too).  I tried to scan from the Gimp and it doesn't work for me either but my scanner (with the "wrong driver") scans in SimpleScan fer sure and I think Skanlite, Xsane-Scanning and XScanImage still work.

Now that I think of it, under what circumstance would one scan FROM the Gimp? I use the scanner to get images not to export.

I have a Epson DX4050 and had the same problem. My workaround was to setup the printer and scanner separately. This gives me 2 entries which I renamed "Printer" and "Scanner". You might have to try both automatic setup and manual setup to get either/both to work.

Maybe downloading this software can solve it.
Best regards
