Remove theme SOLVED
« on: April 14, 2011, 12:28:34 PM »
I hate posting for fear of getting an RTFM, however I just can't seem to find what I need.  Installed the, IMHO, awful bacon theme.  Tried removing it, tried installing other themes, tried inserting new images into the message cpio archive (usr/share/gfxboot/themes/current/message...). Tried kgrubeditor.  Tried ANYTHING I could find.  Ended up removing everything to do with any graphical theme.  Still get this stupid bacon picture coming up following the grub menu, and during shut down.  Any ideas most welcome...
Thx

Hi,

may be is it the "splash screen" ?
Configure desktop -> Workspace appearance and behavior -> Workspace appearance -> Splash screen ?

:) Thanks Menotu. Just another reason why I honestly can't figure out why other distros even bother...

AS: I wish it were that easy (actually I'm glad it wasn't because I'd really feel StOoPId!!!)
The theme that is controlled by: Configure desktop -> Workspace appearance and behavior -> Workspace appearance -> Splash screen  comes up ok.
The bacon comes up after the grub menu (I dual boot--I feel shameful, but I actually kind of like Win7), and before the splash that is controlled by what you write of.  I'm still trying...really don't wanna reinstall, but it bugs me that much!!!
Thx

Adeswas,

To reiterate what menotu said ... RTFM is NOT spoken here. Period.

So feel free to post here, without suffering the indignation of RTFM.

Hi Adeswas,

On a terminal/shell (aka a windows with only a prompt), as root type in switch-themes -c. This will tell you your current theme. Then type switch-themes -l, and this will give you a list of themes available for you to use. Next, type switch-themes <preferred_theme> where <preferred_theme> is the theme on the list you'd like to use. Be careful to type correctly and do not leave out the hyphens and dashes plus the differences between lowercases and caps. Finally, type switch-themes -u which migh take a few seconds or minutes to update your theme settings for GRUB and the bootsplash.

So, you're done. Reboot and see if that fixes it. Let us know, will yah?

the worst reply you can get here is the one i give, "please search in the forum before post" or "have you searched in the forum?"

the number one rule of our forum is search

if you think about it, that is not a bad reply  ;)   :D

there was a trend of answer that google is your friend but i hate it, almost no one uses it

the forum is here to help you but mostly to entertain you(hint: sandbox)  :D

Thanks all.  Sometimes one gets so busy trying to find things all over the net, they forget that this is the best forum there is.

Archie, did what you suggested:  got this result

[root@localhost adrian]# switch-themes -c
The current theme is:

[adrian@localhost ~]$ switch-themes -l
Available themes are :
                        Bacon
                        BlueDobie
                        BlueMoon
                        Coffee
                        details
                        text

Which is a little odd as I uninstalled everything I could think of. So I reinstalled a theme and selected it through the cli with the switch-themes <preferred_theme> command as Archie suggested.  Ran the switch-themes -u and rebooted with fingers diligently crossed.
Thanks to you, voila, my computer is (literally) Kosher again---no bacon!!!!
Thank you all for your help.
Keep ridin' that Penguin!!

Interesting thread & helpful commands Archie.
A very cool cli. I mistook the -l switch for a -1 (one) but got the simple help screen that id'd it.

[hijack]Archie, do you know a cli to control the screensaver? I want to make a script to enable & disable it. Tx [/hijack]  ;D ;D

@johnmart. i had used xscreensaver until recently when i preferred plain, old xlock.

I created a shortcut keypress (Meta+F12) to toggle xlock and display the pyro2 module. It could be set to display random one whichever display at any given time. Send me a PM with your email address and we can work on whichever one that you might take fancy on. Either on xscreensaver or xlockmore.

In the meantime, which one did you install?

Adeswas,
You can review Plymouth themes here:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,76205.0.html

The gfxboot theme (grub screen) and the GDM/KDM theme of the same name, installed with a task-"whatever"-theme will have a matching appearance.

Plymouth themes can be changed with -- Menu > More Applications > Configuration > EZswitch. This does not change grub (gfxboot) or login (GDM/KDM) themes.
