Openbox ISO Update?
« on: April 14, 2011, 07:32:57 AM »
Hi melodie,

I have noted that the ISO for Openbox is still 2010.11.  This means that the update after install can be bigger than the install download itself.  I have also noted that Tex himself has suggested that if people haven't updated their system for a couple of months then they should reinstall with a more up-to-date ISO.  Bit drastic, but there you go.

I was just wondering if you had plans for an updated ISO.  I guess my next question is - do you want any help with this?  I am a huge fan of Openbox - I can't see myself running anything else, and believe me, I have tried them all!  Besides, I'm getting a bit tired of some of these upstart DEs hogging the limelight!!  Time for Openbox to put its stamp back on things :D

So let us know where you are heading.  I am offering whatever assistance I can to keep Openbox up there with the others.

Hi,

I do have plans and started working on it. But at one moment, my install failed to be able to produce isos that were able to boot (stuck after plymouth). Then some time passed, tried again after update and didn't work. Retried with the same mylivecd/squashfs-tools version on a bonsai install in vbox, that worked. So I have to reinstall the last version as of march 31 (not available for all just now), and try again.

I have done a backup of the synaptic history, in order to be able to install the same apps.

In the meantime, I have done a bonsai that works as of march 2011, you'll find it here : http://melodie.tyruiop.org/pclinuxos-core-cli-and-children/
(266 MB)

Else, if I don't succeed with the Openbox full as I want, I'll have to rebuild it from a bonsai. And I am about to move this month... ^^

So you may not have one before May.

Otherwise there is a version in French at the end of this page:
http://melodie.tyruiop.org/PCLOS-Old-World-fr

you can use it and make it in English with Addlocale, but I have then thought of new and more improvements while I was building the version in English...

Hi melodie,

Good to hear you are on the case.  I hadn't heard anything about Openbox for a while, and just wanted to offer my assistance if you were getting snowed under.  The offer still stands by the way.  I'll have a look at the French version - should be a bit of fun playing with add locale.

Oh, and good luck with the move.  After death of a spouse, moving is rated as one of the most stressful life events.  May it all go smoothly

Thanks Taco !

Well thanks for your offer as well... but no. On the other hand, if you would be willing to help me do the "PCLinuxOS French collection", I would accept with great pleasure, as I don't have enough time to do them all. And also I have a small batch of files for the system in which the translations for several countries have been added : and I don't know if the people in charge/ I'm not sure at all that they are on the way to being used. I probably should check where in my hard drive I put them, and let them online somewhere.

As for the move no stress here. We are used to moving, (3 moves in the 5 last years) organized and have friends to help. I just have to pack the things in the boxes and anyhow we are not moving very far. One good news for my participation here, I'll have a bigger bandwidth, therefore instead of uploading one iso in a night, I'll be able to upload 2, or 3 or who knows ? Maybe more ! :D

And what about downloading the other isos ? That will be so fast ! \o/ !

Have a nice day, and have fun with the version in French. :)

(When you will try it, take a look into /home/guest/.config/openbox, you might find files for French and files for English there).

Hi dobbs, welcome to "pclos openbox gang" ! ;D

Well I just moved and have plenty to do. So you won't have an update of the isos before Texstar sends the message for all new isos I guess, and it might even be again among the latest for the Openbox version (Check the announcement section once a while). But, if you have it already installed, and if you read here : Re: PCLinuxOS OpenBox Tricks and follow the advices, you will likely get something looking very close to what the 2011 version will be. :-)

Regards,
Mélodie

I'm brandnew here on this forum and coming from Belgium. Let me tell you that PCLOS OpenBox Bonsai is just one great distro. It's about the only one that runs smoothly AND efficiently on my ten-year old Toshiba laptop (750 MHz - 128 RAM). All the other distro's failed, were way to slow or my screen remained 800 x 600 (all Debian-based distro's). Very nice job  :)

Hi Ferre - big welcome to the forum, nice to have you with us.

I agree with you that melodie has done a great job building OpenBox to where it is now.

I agree with you I have done a continuous effort in leading it as a project, but apart from a few discoveries on my own the most beautiful things in it come from other people all very talented. :)

Reminder : Texstar and his system as a base (mylivecd, the repositories, and all his organization generally) ; etjr, and his cli iso (there has been a recent version that I am mirroring at my "melodie.tyruiop.org" space, for who are interested to get it), mimas who's openbox-menu program has been my first motivation for switching to Openbox in the first place, and also later his configuration in /etc/rc.local in order to get an automatic use of ramzswap, and now zram0 (from the compcache project) in the Openbox versions (first in Bonsaï), the man who did the all made configurations in his Openbox live version at Archlinux (Calimeroteknic), who helped me with that to use them and get the best of it, for the PCLinuxOS Openbox project, and all you guys who have participated to the testing versions so actively that it has been a great help and motivation.

So I am also very grateful for all the help received. :D

Regards,
Mélodie
