Sound settings reset after restart or shut down. [Solved]
« on: April 14, 2011, 03:02:50 AM »
Hi,

After the latest update of my install I have my alsa sound settings all set to 0 once I restart my install.  I know my settings and made a screenshot of my settings i8n Gnome-Alsa-Mixer, so I won't forget.

Still would be nice if my settings could be remembered so I don't need to do this, especially my mic settings need to have a certain selection.

Any nudge in the correct direction will be appreciated.

Celeron 2.0Ghz with 1.3Gb Ram and internal sound.

Try this:
Install alsamixergui. Open it and click the lock icon for 'master' to unlock it. Set the master via the slides above the lock. Click the lock icon to lock it. Follow the same procedure for other settings. Close alsamixergui and reboot. Your settings should remain.

Survived a logout, not a restart.  I wonder what file was updated to have this malfunction.

Any other ideas are very welcome.

Maybe something in one of these threads will help.

Thanks Neal.  I can't get too much out of this threads so.  Your solution makes so much sense - it just doesn't stick.  As I say, I reset my alsa mixer after every startup and it works perfect even with skype, which was a bit of a headache before.

Since this appears to be a problem mostly LXDE users have (or others haven't come to the fore) and you are at your wits end and I don't have a clue I reckon we will have to let this simmer a bit.

Maybe one of the next updates will come to the rescue.  ;)

BTW - that Gnome-Alsa-Mixer is really useful, without it I would have been totally lost and wouldn't have got my camera mic going.

FWIW,  this is happening in e17 full version too. Sound settings do not survive a reboot.

I don't need no steenking Windows --tuxalish

Hi All,

Try this.  I had this same problem on two of four laptops.  For some reason, after updating to the current version of alsa, the asound.state file in /var/lib/alsa was missing.  Check to see if it's there.  If it's not, as root, create an empty text file named asound.state.  After that reboot, set your volume levels, reboot again and see if the settings are saved.

You sure about this?  I don't even have a /var/lib/alsa directory ...  :-\
