SOLVED - Virtual box versions problem

I have Virtualbox installed and running nicely for some months.

The last update of PcLos installed v4.0.4 but, the VB splash screen shows the version as the old one 3.2.12. Now,  when I open Virtual box, I get the message asking me if I would like to update it.

Can I update directly from Oracle or would that be risky?

The version of VirtualBox you have installed previously was 3.2.12. Was this installed from the PCLinuxOS repository or from an Oracle download?

I think you should backup your VMs and go ahead with the update from the repository. I had updated from 4.0.0 to 4.0.4 and all is well on my application.

Yes - installed from the repository - as GetVirtualBox

But I already got the update from the repo in the last general update

Maurice, unless I am mistaken you should have a new "GetVirtualBox" script that will download and instal the 4.0.4 version. It recognizes the old version and uninstalls it. You should be fine if you have the new script.
You will have to reboot your box after running the script but it tells you that after the install.

Look in "More Applications/ Emulators/ Get Oracle VM Virtualbox".

The new one is FAST! LOL

Can't find such a script Rudge - where would it be?

This the sequence of events --

I downloaded version 3.2.12 through the repo some months ago.

Some time later this was updated to version 4.0.4 in a normal update from the repo and showed up in Synaptic as version 4.0.4 .

But, when I run Virtualbox it appears as version 3.2.12 and asks me if I want to upgrade.

In other words -

According to Synaptic I have version 4.0.4.

According to Oracle I have version 3.2.12 which it keeps asking if I want to upgrade.

My question is - Which version do I have?

Well to answer your question, when you start the software and look at the version number, rest assured that what ever it says, is the version you are running.

For me, this installed the latest VB

If this is not working for you perhaps you need to go back into synaptic and install the latest "getvirtualbox" script and then try looking for it again in the location I have provided. ?

getvirtualbox is a script which will do what its name suggest. First you install it via Synaptic and then you must run it in order to upgrade your old version. This is the same concept like lomanager, installing it will just give you the script but you must then execute this script to get LibreOffice installed. So the question is, did you actually run getvirtualbox? To do that, open a terminal (Konsole) and enter:

su -c getvirtualbox or click on PCmenu -> More Applications -> Emulators -> Get Oracle VM VirtualBox. After the installation reboot your PC.

Duh - I was looking in the wrong place for the script.

Got it and downloaded it and it's opened up OK. Now to start trying it out.
