right-click menu problem in Thunar
« on: April 13, 2011, 08:47:06 AM »
We had encountered a small glitch with Thunar and the Aurora gtk theme in Openbox, with the problem and solution listed below.

Edit:  I am seeing a small problem with Thunar.  When right clicking on anything to open an options box, the box will close whenever the mouse button is released.  Normally it stays open when the button is released.  It works fine in pcmanfm and everywhere else.

Something I have been meaning to ask about.  In Thunar, on an item in a folder I need to hold the right-click down to be able to use the menu.  Everywhere else is fine, even in empty space in a folder.  Occasionally a really fast right-click will stay open, but that's a rarity.

Has anyone come across this or should I start a new thread?

This has been a small glitch with my Openbox install that I have just learnt to live with.  Right-clicking on a file in Thunar meant holding down the right button whilst a selection was made.  Bit like the good old days of Mac System 6!  However, I think I may have found a solution.

I had installed lxappearance and was playing around with various gtk themes.  I found when trying other themes that the right-click worked fine.  I narrowed the culprit down to Aurora, and any of its variations.  It is the default theme for OB so that was a bit of an issue.  We have OB on two computers, one a P4 and the other a duo-core - same issue on each.  I selected Raleigh as the theme and now all is good.  Right-click button works as it should.  So just install lxappearance from the repo and make the change.

There had been a few of us back then with this issue - I hope this is of help.

The following question has been raised in the OB forum - is this a Thunar/theme thing and has anyone in the XFCE community come across this issue?  Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

never experienced any issues in XFCE relating to this ... your problem lies with openbox and it's theme management

I've just tested this in LXDE and get the same results. It seems related to the aurora theme, but in what way, I am not sure.

edit: The right click problem does not appear when the theme elegant-aurora is used.

That's interesting, Neal - maybe it is an Openbox issue as Sproggy suggests.  I just checked again and I definitely get it both with Aurora and aurora-elegant.

Hmm...... a thought - run obconf and switch openbox themes. Does it happen with other ob themes in use?

Sorry Neal, but same result.  I had lxappearance and obconf open next to each other and tried all sorts of combos.  Aurora and aurora-elegant don't want to play, regardless of OB theme.

my advice would be to use PCmanFM or Xfe rather than Thunar ... altho Thunar can be used for other DE's it doesnt necessarily mean it will work with that DE ... Thunar is designed for XFCE by the XFCE Dev's ... as for Melodies suggestion about going to the XFCE Dev's and asking them to look into it thats like asking a Gnome User to go ask the KDE guys to fix Gnome ... it's an absurb suggestion ... ive repeateded this many times ... Use the tools for the Environment you use ... then you wont get issues like this

Well I'll be danged - google truly is your friend!!  Just did a quick search and found this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=53403 with the solution detailed here http://zuttobenkyou.wordpress.com/2008/11/10/aurora-gtk-engine-14-fix-for-thunar/.
I haven't checked out the file yet - I've just got to find it!

Sproggy - plenty of other distros use Thunar in Openbox.  Crunchbang is the one that whet my appetite for the combo.  The thing with linux is that the components should be mix-n-match - small glitches pop up from time to time, but they do even when things are supposedly matched!

I think that's it -
Quote
Open up ~/.themes/Aurora/gtk-2.0/gtkrc, and change the GtkMenu::vertical-padding = 0 to GtkMenu::vertical-padding = 1. Now if you right-click on a file or folder in Thunar, the pop-up menu works properly.
I have made the change and now both Aurora and aurora-elegant work as they should.  I'll pass this on to the Openbox forum.  It may also be of use to the LXDE users.

EDIT - folder path in OB is /usr/share/themes/theme_name/

That fixed it.

In LXDE, we use PCManFM, except for packaging. To build RPMs, thunar has to be installed.

no problems in XFCE where Thunar belongs with any themes or theme engines work as designed ... stop using thunar in open box then you wouldnt have any problems ... SIMPLES!!..

Kori,
Be nice. Be proud that thunar can be used with other DEs and WMs.

Taco, just a question (I just answered you in the other thread) : once the change applied, does it still work nicely in PCManFM ?
