Yesterday I installed the latest version of LXDE on one of my machines. It installed with no problem. I then did a complete update. No problem. I then installed the rest of the programs I need for my work. All went perfectly until I came to install Libre Office - which is the one I need more than any other. The install via lomanager went fine and everything works on it apart from the 'Save' function. When I try to save anything - via the drop-down menu or via CTRL+S it freezes the whole program. A box appears asking me if I'd like to force its closure. That seems the only way out of it.

I'm using the latest lomanager in the repo.  And I've downloaded and used that manager from two different repos, doing a reboot in between - just in case the first one I used was corrupt. Anybody got any thoughts on this? It's a complete deal-breaker in terms of my working on that machine in that location.

Later that day -- I've now got some sort of handle on it and weirdly it seems to be related to Spider Oak. I've tried this now on two different machines - each with a new LXDE install, fully updated. Putting it simply - after best part of three hours playing around with it - with Spider Oak installed (via the repo) if I use the 'Save' or 'Save As' functions (via drop-down and via keystrokes) it locks Libre Office up solid. If I completely un-install Spider Oak (not just 'Uninstall - that doesn't work) Libre Office works perfectly. I couldn't begin to hazard a guess as to what's that about, but what it does mean is that I either have to get rid of LXDE (there's no problem with Gnome on my main machine) or go back to using Dropbox instead of Spider Oak. OK, Dropbox is brilliant - apart from, in my opinion - its security. Your data, including your password, is not - as in Spider Oak - encrypted on your computer. How important that is in the final analysis is impossible to tell. But I have in the past experienced one heart-stopper with Dropbox (turned out alright in the end) and so I'm a bit wary .

But if anybody has any light to throw on what seems to be a problem unique to me  :-\  and my systems, I'd be really intrigued. And very happy to re-install Spider Oak.

Until someone figures out and fixes the problem between LibreOffice and Spideroak, using dropbox may be the only solution. So long as your files are not stored in your public folder, they are secure/password protected. You can invite others to share a folder, but that takes deliberate action on your part.

So is this a known problem between Libre Office and Spider Oak? Strangely there's no conflict on my Gnome machine, only on the two LXDE machines. And thank you for the links. I know how secure they claim data to be, but to my mind there's a lot of difference between encryption which takes place at the server end - Dropbox - and that which takes place at your computer end - Spider Oak, Wuala e.g. Even your password with the last two is encrypted on your own PC. I have a number of files - mainly my own in-process writing - for which I like to have the very best security that's around. I guess I could try Wuala out - or even encrypt everything on the Dropbox folder on the LXDE machines. Confusing.  :-\

And I've just seen the latest here from 7272andy - that would tally with my experience - as I've just indicated there's no problem on my main Gnome machine. I'm wondering now if I shouldn't put Gnome on the LXDE machines at least until the problem is sorted. Is anybody working on this one?

Further to my last - I decided in the end it was better to remove LXDE from the two machines and replace them with Gnome. That way I get to keep Spider Oak alongside Libre Office. The lure of Spider Oak's encryption on one's own PC, along with the fact that due to a longish exchange I had with them some time ago re Spider Oak's failure to start at boot-up they gave me (!) 10gb on top of the 2gb you get for free. So I have 12gb for free. Deal-clincher. But I hope the problem between it and LXDE gets sorted - I'd like ideally to put it back on those two machines.
