AMD64, pclos regularly updated (btw, how do I find out what version of pclos I'm using?), Gnome 2.32.0, Epson stylus DX4450.

I want to find out my ink levels and am stuck. The printer isn't working and is showing the "Low ink" light, but I don't know which of the four cartridges is low. All are genuine Epson branded cartridges. I suspect the black but have recently put a new cartridge in. I have tried to use the following, with no success.

libinklevel-4.0.7.1 contains 2 docs, a general public licence and a readme which states "You need gcc installed. libieee1284 is required." According to synaptic, I have them. There doesn't seem to be any executable-type program in the libinklevel folder, or am I missing something?

mtink states: "No access to printer device file. Please make sure that mtink has enough right for accessing the device files." Epson utilities v 1.0.16 has all options greyed out.

escputil states: "Obtaining ink levels requires using a raw device."

All I want to do is find out my ink levels! Can't be that difficult...

I have a DX4050 so I am interested in the outcome of your post. There is an application which shows ink levels of Epson printers but I don't know how reliable it is. I am not at my own machine at the moment so can't remember what the application is called. I will check later. I don't use Epson cartridges preferring to buy cheaper alternatives from a well known auction/shopping website and I have had no problems, so when one of the colours goes, usually black, I do a full swap. Last set of cartridges I bought were £14 ($20) for a set of 3.

The app is called gutenprint-escputil and is in the repo. It might well be worth looking at epsoneplijs

I have an Epson NX420 and it stopped printing a few days ago and was asking for "ink".  I have Epson Print Manager installed from Synaptic (search Epson) which is in More Applications > Printing BUT it wouldn't work (becasue the printer was out of "ink" - duhhhh).  So I fooled it by logging out and turning the printer off and on. Maybe I just got lucky but when I tried the Epson Print Manager again it told me what the status was of each color (my low one was the blue). YMMV

mtink should do the job and it is in the repos

Thanks for the replies folks, still no nearer success. Epson Print Manager is mtink, which I have tried both from the menu and from a terminal; outputs "No access to printer device file. Please make sure that mtink has enough right for accessing the device files." I have also run escputil from terminal, no joy, outputs "Obtaining ink levels requires using a raw device."; and synaptic tells me I have epsoneplijs installed, but it won't tell me where, nor will the search function, and likewise nor will recoll. Terminal tells me it's not in usr/bin/. Do I simply bite the bullet and buy four new cartridges? Or shall I break all the rules and download a new printer driver from epson? If so, I'll need more assistance - the epson site specifies downloads for pclos, then on the next page gives me several options, none of which is pclos!!! Are we Redhat/rpm based, or Debian based? I'll be back later asking for idiot-proof installing instructions...

Chances are you will need every cartridge before you eventually wear out the printer. Get the set, try them in your suspected "order of used". If you guess wrong it's not like the partial cartridge won't go back in. No waste, just tied up capital (so to speak).

Should have RTFMF - apparently, if I press the Stop button on the printer, the cartridge holder slides along to a little pointer and stops next to the colour cartridge which is empty - in my case, cyan, yellow and magenta. New set ordered. Arrives tomorrow. Will post further details then. still no nearer a software solution though!

OK, I'm getting boring now. Bought some new ink cartridges, put 'em in, printer works a treat. Still no news on mtink, so I'll just forget it. Can now print documents. HOWEVER the DX4450 is also a copier and scanner - had to do a copy of my driving licence for identification and it chopped off 1/4 of an inch, and made the whole thing four times bigger; but at least I got a print-out. And I can't get any of my graphics progs (gimp, openoffice-draw, sane etc) to recognise it as a scanner. Any ideas, or shall I re-post as "Scanner problem"? P.S. Think I'll do that anyway ... might trap a few more unsuspecting forum members into helping me ...

You might try what I did here and not use PrinterDrake. http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,86567.msg720739.html#msg720739

As I said in that post I got the scanner working. I have the Epson Stylus NX420 but the "set up scanner" option in the Control Center Hardware does not offer the NX420 as a choice. I picked the Epson Stylus Photo RX420 becasue it has "X420" in it's name(?).  It worked, it scans and printing continued to work too.

Now that I think of it mtink might not have been reporting ink levels until I got rid of PrinterDrake.

Nope, still not scanning, still not showing ink levels. I uninstalled printerdrake, hp, and lexmark - don't know quite what the latter two were doing on my pc in the first place, unless that nice Mr Tex puts them in synaptic for everyone. Reinstalled epson stuff, added some more epson stuff which was in repository but not installed, also installed a bit of sane which was missing. Been into cups - it sees my printer and lets me do nice things to it, which is very friendly. But oddly, setting up a scanner only sees my webcam. When I unplug the cam, the system tells me there are no scanners attached - but my DX4450 is a scanner. Shouting this at the screen doesn't seem to help matters. However, partial success - set up scanner eventually allowed me to get it to recognise that there is an epson scanner on the system - however I can't do anything with it, gimp sub-menu xscanimage does nothing, openofficedraw sees an unnamed epson scanner but doesn't do anything with it, xsane sees an unknown model epson but tells me it's busy. No it isn't you stupid machine. It's sitting there waiting to do something. I'm like the man with a steering wheel attached to the front of my trousers - it's driving me nuts.

Maybe you did this but did you install the scanner from PCC>hardware?  There is one list called EPSON and then below that is another called EPSON CORP. Granted there is no DX4550 driver but under EPSON CORP is the DX3850 (4 out of 6 the same, DX and 50). I'd try that.
I tried the Gimp thing and it didn't work for me either (seems like it's pointing to the wrong place) but my scanner (with the "wrong driver") scans in SimpleScan (just tried it) and I think Skanlite, Xsane-Scanning and XScanImage still work.
Gimp did have Mtink as the last item under the filters menu though and that worked for me. Thanks for getting me to look.
