But Multimedia - System comes up
with an error message [that I am
unable to highlight and copy for
you] that Sound and Video configuration
cannot load the library it needs.

can you tell us at least the name of the required library ?

IF I JUST UPGRADED TO PCLINUX.OS 2010.12
WOULD THIS NIGHTMARE GO AWAY BY ITSELF?

You can't update to some version, you can update up to the current status, and if you install the updates from time to time
you are always at current status, and you will never be required to install a new version.

If something is not clear, please ask.

OK!  That's just the latest version
I know of.  I'll order the CD.

I'll see when I get upgraded.

Without you guys I'd
be HOPELESSLY lost!

I'm still lost, but at

which way to go next!

KP:

Let's start at the beginning. Exactly, what is it you have installed? What liveCD was used for the installation? When did the initial installation take place? Have you been doing regular updates/upgrades starting from right after you installed the OS? That means opening Synaptic and clicking Reload --> Mark All Upgrades --> Apply and then Apply again from the confirmation window.

I ask because you talk about ordering a CD when asked if you are fully upgraded. Upgrading is done online, through Synaptic as stated above. If you keep updated, you don't need new liveCDs. That's what a rolling distribution is all about; you install, upgrade through Synaptic, then continuously upgrade whenever newer applications are added to the repo mirrors.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Last fall?  Continuing.

Haven't finished the installation yet.

I just downloaded the list,
plus that one, not all.

No wonder my files were out of date!

FANTASTIC!  I DIDN'T KNOW!

The only thing wrong with that for me
is my line-repeater dialup at 1-2 Kb/s.

It's faster to have them mail a disc.

I've been trying to break out of this
retro-techno bubble for a long time,
but it hasn't hasn't happened yet.

Thanks very much for your comments!

No wonder I'm having such problems!

I didn't have a clue!

I keep saying that, but
no one believes me yet!

It can be a big problem to live with a rolling distribution and this low speed connectivity...
You should take into consideration the FullMonty edition, and to live without update/upgrade once installed:

Something I have not seen suggested previously, but which might work for some .....  find some kind soul who would sync the repository to an external HDD, along with some useful files like all the latest ISOs etc.
Maybe once per month if required that external HDD repository could be updated.

To me this would be the most versatile way ------  if a kind soul can be found locally, with the facility to download the repo .....

THANKS VERY MUCH FOR ALL THE INPUT!

I never heard of Full Monty before!

I started synaptic downloading yesterday.
It's already copied 80+ of 800+ marked files.
It should be completed in somewhere between
4 and 49 days!  All is not lost ... yet!

AT LEAST MY REPUTATION AS THE POSTER
BOY FOR CLUELESSNESS IS COMPLETELY SAFE!

Getting the sound on in videos turned out
to be a bit more than I bargained for!

My local computer store should be able
to download Full Monty for me.  I'm their
only linux user, but they are very sharp!

The long-term solution has got to be a
cell-phone modem.  I have a disability
interview this week!  Pray for me!

========================
THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!
========================

I'D REALLY BE LOST WITHOUT THIS F0RUM!

It's my only contact with something sensible!

I hope you have Synaptic set to retain packages so that you can copy them to a backup, in case they are ever needed again.

Maybe you could do a deal with them to d/load the full repository to an external HDD, and do a monthly update of it.

You never know ....

I almost hesitate to offer a suggestion for a fix after seeing all the top guns responding to your query.  Oh well here goes... I had a similar problem with one of my machines and my solution was to run KMIX, go to the configure tab and be sure the output I was connecting my speakers to were in the list shown on the right of the box.  To try different outputs drag and drop them from the left to the right panel.  Also make sure that they are enabled and the volume is up...
In everything give thanks
