or if you go  youtube?
what is your master channel?
did you run alsaconf as root?

Yes!  That's why I was so
happy that the CD played
even one track!  At least
I know it's hooked up!

The CD played one track!

No!

you have done that! you couldn't instal pclinuxos without running a live cd...
so you could try to boot with your cd and see if you have sound(s)...

> did you run alsaconf as root?

Don't know.

you can do it now! open a terminal su to root and type alsaconf.

OK!  I'll reboot and report later.

Now I can see that I did!

OK!  I did that again, seems to be
installed OK, but still no sound on videos.

Hi KP,

try to open "configure your desktop", then goto Hardware -> Multimedia -> Phonon and in "Device preferences" check about "audio output" -> Video,
after any changes related to Phonon settings.

(Note that there is also a test button, to immediately check about sound)

Rebooting from the Live CD
didn't work out very well.

First, it just booted from
the disk, not the CD in the
drive, as it came up with
all my bookmarks and stuff.

I forced the issue by popping
the CD in again, which raised
the "something plugged in alert".
Of seven choices, two of them
were play and PLAY. I tried both.

Nothing ever happened.

At least the diskopy still works!

No sound and no clue!

Another answer:

> Hi KP,
>
> try to open "configure your desktop",

OK!  Where would I find that?

/home/user/Desktop/
does not seem to be the answer.

There are lots of configuration
options on the Pclinux Control Center,
but I don't find one for desktop.

OK!  As soon as I find out how to get there.

I was looking for Phonon
before, but never found it.

As soon as I find it,
I'll push it for sure!

The problem appears to be with the alsa packages. I have been having issues all day with 2 computers with completely different hardware loosing the volume levels on every reboot. The last thing I tried was resetting the levels and removing alsa-utils and alsaconf, upon reboot my mixer settings were as I left them. Reinstalling the two alsa packages made the issue return.

AH!  Thank you very much!

I was starting to think
I had set a new world
record for stupidity!

Sounds like a typical computer day for me.

I avoid reboots like the plague:
it takes hours to reload on my
1-2Kb/s connection.

Why haven't I heard about this before?
Is this fault newly discovered?
Does it affect many people?
Are engineers working on it?
We there be a new release soon
which fixes it up?
I'm hoping to do some sound editing.

In an earlier response you said .....

Quote
> Configure your Desktop - Hardware - Multimedia - Phonon ..........
> ensure that HDMI is not the preferred output for all the options.

Desktop - Hardare is fine, but then there
is no multimedia, just Sound Configuration
to the ALSA driver.  No phonon found.
Never saw any reference to HDMI.

Please use Configure your Desktop ......  and not Configure your Computer

I finally found the configure
desktop icon, [again?] right there
at the bottom of the screen!

And I found Hardware!

But there is still no Multimedia,
under hardware, so no Phonon either!

However, I did find Multimedia,
father down the list, under
Computer Admin, also known as
System Settings!

From earlier post:
>> then goto Hardware -> Multimedia -> Phonon and in "Device
>> preferences" check about "audio output" -> Video, after any changes
>> related to Phonon settings.

Multimedia is not under hardware,
and has no listing for Phonon.

Under Multimedia I DO find
"device preferences", but it's just
HDA Intel ALC880, digital or analog
and neither one STAYS selected for me.

The "test" button makes no sound at all!

Still clueless with no sound!

Hi KP,

two question:

1) is your system up to date ?
2) can you find libphonon4 in synaptic and verify if it's installed ?

It would appear as if you have not updated to current KDE4  .......

KP:

If you are fully upgraded, and have all the proper packages installed, you should see this;

FANTASTIC!

You got it!

My libphonon4 was an outdated version!
I updated it!

Now Configure Your Desktop
comes up with a new screen!

But Multimedia - System comes up
with an error message [that I am
unable to highlight and copy for
you] that Sound and Video configuration
cannot load the library it needs.

So you all found a big problem,
but it's not solved yet.

Still no sound.

IF I JUST UPGRADED TO PCLINUX.OS 2010.12
WOULD THIS NIGHTMARE GO AWAY BY ITSELF?

I'm still trying to get an outdated
operating system installed properly.
Maybe it's time to give up!

Is that my clue?

Upgrade the entire system, not just random packages.
