No Sound

I've got my old compaq
running on PCLinusOS 2010!
Modem, email and sites work
fine now.  But I've got no
sound.  I pop a CD in the
drive, and I get a lot of
options, but no sound and
nothing to click for that.

My local guy says that I
probably just need drivers,
but he's a windows man.

What do I need to do?

People need more info here like model of laptop and type of audio to give you some help
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

Specifically in this case pay attention to:

"5. Include as much information as you can when seeking help. This may
include PCLinuxOS version #, a list of your systems hardware, also possibly
logs and command line output. Nobody can help you if you refuse to give
    sufficient detail.
"

Don't get scared off, we want to help but we simply can't based on the info you provided.  ;)

"No sound?" Could be no speakers?  You see what I mean?

OK!

I read it again.  The only thing I
see is #5, give enough information.

It's a Compaq Presario SR2150NX with
1.5 gigs RAM.  It has a new Intel
Desktop Board D925XBC motherboard,
but the old motherboard
had no sound under Linux either.
The sound ports seem to come from
the motherboard; I don't think it
has a separate sound card.
I have a pair of Labtec self-powered
speakers, which worked before,
but now make no sound.

That's all I can think of.
What else should you know?

Thanks for writing!

OK, we can help.
Open a terminal and type
"su" It will ask for a password. you must enter the root password.
Then type "alsaconf" hit enter.
You should then be in a screen that will walk you through setting up your sound card.
Follow the steps.

Worked like a charm!
Alsa is happily set up.

Now Amarok displays the CD
and track titles on the menu!

In addition to the track list
on the left, now it's duplicated
on the right too!

It even says the track is playing!

But I still don't hear anything.

I never had any problem with these
speakers before.  The pink and green
plugs are in their sockets on the
back of the case.

The speaker power light is on.
The volume is up.

I went to HDA Intel and made
sure all the channels were on.

Obviously, I'm still doing
something very wrong, but I
surely don't know what it is.

I'm completely baffled!
[Which is not unusual!]

It may be that a digital sound out has taken priority -- if the motherboard has such an output.

Configure your Desktop - Hardware - Multimedia - Phonon ..........  ensure that HDMI is not the preferred output for all the options.

I disabled it here as I don't use it .....  but dropping it down the priority list should help.

I checked that, but I was calling it HDA Intel.

I don't think so?

Desktop - Hardare is fine, but then there
is no multimedia, just Sound Configuration
to the ALSA driver.  No phonon found.
Never saw any reference to HDMI.

I GOT IT TO PLAY A CD!

I didn't know how to use Amarok
and there was EQ as well as mixer.
I am slowly figuring it out!

Now I am listening to a CD!

It quit prematurely, and I have
been unable to start it again.

Amarok is very frustrating to me,
but at least I know my system makes
noise.  That's a big improvement!

I'll probably get it figured out eventually!

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO POSTED!

Note:  My HDMI is what the OS picks up from the Graphics card which I replaced recently. As I do not use it, I disabled it.

Another premature celebration.

Yes I got a CD to play!  Some
glitch in Amarok kills it with
an error message after one track,
but at least the speakers DO make
noise for a while!  Finally!

But when I play a news video in
Thunderbird, no noise at all!

I looked for a sound setting,
but found nothing.

What am I STILL doing wrong?

I got an idea that most of the geeks in the forum would agree is valid but with an attitude such as that ... I dunno. All the exclamations (!) and the "tone" of the posts do not strike me as a what a PCLinuxOS user ought to be. I'll probably get a, "you're wrong, dope!" reply but hey, I might as well help.

Delete kmixrc and amarokrc on ~/.kde4/config/ and restart the apps.

I agree I am surely
not what I should be!

But what to do about it?

Under .kde4/ I don't have any config.
I have these choices:

file:///home/user/.kde4/Autostart
file:///home/user/.kde4/cache-localhost.localdomain
file:///home/user/.kde4/share
file:///home/user/.kde4/socket-localhost.localdomain
file:///home/user/.kde4/tmp-localhost.localdomain

Under /home/user/.kde4/tmp-localhost.localdomain/
I deleted these files:
file:///home/user/.kde4/tmp-localhost.localdomain/amarokE18052.css
file:///home/user/.kde4/tmp-localhost.localdomain/amarokq17818.css

I went back to my browser: still no sound.

Still no clue!

Try -

~/.kde4/share/config/   ;)

It never hurts to poke around, a bit on your own, when someone is trying to help.  ;) ;)

Thanks!

Got both of them!

YES!

That's exactly what I did!

I even found a couple
of files to delete!

They just weren't
the right ones! ;-)

What I lack in insight, I
compensate by initiative!

So I reloaded kmix which has the
same settings as before, and Amorok,
which I don't think I need, and my
browser tab ...

Still no sound.

I can see him talking,
but I can't hear him!
