Delete the file; recreate it as an empty file using an editor (Kwrite maybe); run alsaconf as root, set the levels and reboot.

Worth a try .......

It is not clear which file you worked on.

Please post the result of this run in a terminal

locate asound.state

bah sorry i meant to say asound.state not audio.state... there is no audio.state in var/lib/alsa

and the output of that command is
Code: [Select]
/var/lib/alsa/asound.state

I suggest you create a link at   /etc/asound.state  to point to   /var/lib/alsa/asound.state

Maybe reboot and see if there is any difference ....  some DEs look for the file in /etc  apparently.

regards.

So happy that you got it solved FritoBandito - just came across this as it seems email notifications don't always work.  I did not try the directions by AndrzejL but it is always appreciated to have things spelled out so well.  :)

I had the same problem and Andy's method seems to have fixed it even though I didn't alter rc.local.  (I tried, but forgot something in vi and had to abort!)  It now seems to restore the volume to whatever setting I had adjusted it to on shutdown rather than any fixed value - which is what I want.

I have also noticed recently that in about one boot in 20 the sound system does not come up at all, but re-appears on a reboot.  It will be interesting to see if this is fixed too.

One worrying thing at the time was that the panel vanished, but it re-appeared when I rebooted.
How does one become a hero?  By asking a lot of dumb questions apparently! I have three computers of various ages, the most powerful is a Dell Netbook 10v; each has 2 or 3 versions of PCLOS of various vintages.  Location, St John's, Newfoundland.

is there any way to let the devs here know about this, or by the fact that we posted it is it already known.
there were a lot of posts recently about sound issues so i figure there is a new issue that has popped up.

And thanks for the support everyone.

FritoBandito,
Do you think "the devs" don't read the forum? Do you think "the devs" are inactive and can't be bothered? Sheesh!
Have a look around the forum. We're all members. If you check, you'll find packagers, creators of our in-house software/tools, members of our graphics team and every other type of dev are all very active forum members. This is in addition to the other volunteer work they do.

Do you read Software Announcements?
Do you read General News and Announcements?
Do you read Texstar's twitter posts? He posted about alsa 2 days ago .

Just got nailed myself, updated Mama's machine to new 2.6.38.4 bfs kernel, all sound gone, none of the posted solutions on any of the threads work, connection refused yada yada when running alsaconf, alsamixer won't start at all, the symlink to asound.state is there, all volumes are up that I know of, worked fine on previous kernel. going to try another one to see what happens.
This aggression will not stand man.
