no (sound is being used by pid 2241)) [FAILED]

That looks to me like some process is preventing alsa from being stopped. Which? I don't know.

It will take someone who understands this better than I do to help beyond this. :(

When that occurs you can start System Activity panel (Ctrl+Esc?), sort by PID and locate and kill the blocking process. Then run again .......

I don't know if it helps, but I only use LXDE with kde core packages. I've got two old expensive soundcards and I get that error whenever I run alsaconf and have ever since we had the resurgence of development.  ;)  :-X

edit: forgot to mention, I worked out some time back that the app holding the soundcard is the lxpanel.  ???

Now these cards were always tolerated by alsa, and initially, pulse audio was an absolute bear. But I followed Tex's instructions in a thread suggesting to install task-pulseaudio. Reboot. etc.

My sound is at least reliable on the two machines. But far from configured properly unfortunately.  :-\

If the sound software packages would sit still for five minutes, I'd write up a tute. But with all the changes and all the editions, I just can't begin.  :(

I am not complaining, because sane support of one of these cards(darla 20) brought me to this distro.  :)

When you stop alsa in PCC, is there a popup message? What does it say?

Sorry for the late reply.  When I tried to stop it, the PID preventing it was for Enlightenment.  Did not seem like a good idea to kill it so I unchecked on boot option, rebooted, and checked PCC to verify it was not running.

Just thought I would add this - when I went to turn Alsa back on I got a pop up telling me it was already running (PID Enlightenment).  So even though it is set to not run on boot,  shows it is stopped, I have sound from my speakers and it is running anyway.  ???

Found the cause of the Alsa/Enlightenment conflict - removed the mixer module in E = no more sound or pop up with error in PCC.  Unfortunately though still no device found with alsaconf.

I tried switching to pulse audio in PCC->sound config   but then I just have no audio at all. Do I have to do something else to setup pulseAudio?

That usually means that Pulse Audio is not starting correctly.
Tick it again in PCC and Reboot the PC.
Try PAVU again.

Ah well, I got to the message stating unable to stop alsa as KDE4 pid and kmix pid's are using it. Still no sound on this recently updated laptop.

Edit: I kept reading and checked 'configure channels' on the kde mixer. There was a channel not shown called 'speaker'. I drug this to visible, maximized, and got sound back.

hmmm i still have no sound.

Thats interesting with the hidden speaker section. I am not using KMIX as I am using not using KDE but I have KDE installed.
Could it be possible that KMIX is running even when I boot up in LXDE?

FritoBandito>This may not be helpful but - if using Alsa and volume not sticking, I think, in /etc/asound.state you should be able to see what your sound settings are.  Mine for example are 31 for max on master, front, etc.  From what I have seen on the web the alsaconf doesn't work for most but was useful with older ISA at one time.
