Alsa config sound problems after updates{SOLVED}
« on: April 06, 2011, 05:59:36 PM »
Sound is working as expected  - the problem is that settings are not being saved.  After a login in it is necessary to load the mixer and change the Front and Master sliders up every time.  This is only a problem with the Enlightenment install.  KDE partition has no such problem.  Both installs with
[mountainman@localhost ~]$ uname -r
2.6.38.2-pclos1.bfs
Searching the forum I found
Quote
Alsa libraries have been updated and been sitting in testing since early February so we are moving them into updates. This should be a clean update. If for some reason you have a sound issue please run alsaconf in a su root terminal before posting support question in the forum. Unfortunately there is no way to automate this process.
from Texstar.

When I do this I get
Code: [Select]
[root@localhost mountainman]# alsaconf
bash: alsaconf: command not found
[root@localhost mountainman]#

From synaptic I reinstalled alsaconf-1.0.24.2-1pclos2011 but get the same result in the terminal.  Can someone please guide me to the next step so that my sound levels are kept.

Hi MountainMan,

try "/usr/sbin/alsaconf", may that be for some obscure reason you don't have /usr/sbin in PATH env var.

Thank you AS

When I navigate to /usr/sbin/alsaconf and as root user try to execute in terminal option I get no response.  Is that the proper way?

My suggestion was only a "workaround" for a possible PATH problem. If alsaconf is effectively installed, it's executable should be in /usr/sbin.
What do you mean by "I get no response" ? Do you have received and aswer like "command not found" or no answer at all ?

Sorry for the explanation - maybe a picture helps.

When choosing either execute option the dialog goes away and no further action.

,

OK, at least we clarified that command alsaconf exist and is installed in your system.
Now please, open PCLinuxOS Control Center -> System -> open a console as administrator <type your root password here>, then type:

/usr/sbin/alsaconf

Install alsamixergui. Open it and click the lock icon for 'master' to unlock it. Set the master via the slides above the lock. Click the lock icon to lock it. Follow the same procedure for othe settings. Close alsamixergui and reboot. Your settings should remain.

That does run the config tool but reports ¨No supported PnP or PCI card found¨.  I did not take the Legacy ISA option because it threatened to make my system unstable - I'm not looking for trouble.
(Btw - I can run the same way from terminal without going to PCC).  Curious why it does not find the sound device - is there something else to try - just for educational purposes?

That fixed the problem with the sliders - thank you Neal :)

As a side note maybe I can find something in that GUI that may get me voices on the ¨Watch 480p¨ link here http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/paul/
Plays OK in windows and I have a slew of codecs installed.

I can mark this partly solved because the alsaconf is ??? or change the title to locking sliders and mark it solved.

If alsa is not 'stopped' when you run alsaconf, you will run into the ¨No supported PnP or PCI card found¨ message.

I have the same issue as the OP but my settings dont stay when I reboot.

and also

volume control in the bottom right panel is default to 0 out of 100% on boot.
but maxing out alsamixergui does solve the sound level issue, just not on reboot.

Im using LXDE and I have alsaconf installed in usr/sbin/alsaconf

LOL I´m sure you know 6 ways to do this.  I was showing off because now I know 2.  My moment in the sun  8).

Understood - In PCC services I stopped Alsa and sound - it still does not find any devices.  Just realized that I still have sound even though PCC reports them stopped.  Is there another service to stop?

When you stop alsa in PCC, is there a popup message? What does it say?

That looks to me like some process is preventing alsa from being stopped. Which? I don't know.

It will take someone who understands this better than I do to help beyond this. :(
