Yesterday I did an update, and now today I'm missing my minimum, maximize and close buttons. I restarted the x server and still a no go, what do I need to restore my buttons?

First thing I'd try is doing a full reboot.
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

See Leiche's post

I use KDE so not sure where to point you - could try changing themes and then back again to see if your icons get re-applied.

If it upgraded to Gnome3 then they have removed those buttons.

I'll look and see if I can find where I read that .

Have you installed some themes outside of the repository? If so please switch to something like Clearlooks and see if the return.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

FYI... Exact thing happened on my machine (started after last set of updates) running fully updated Zen-Mini gnome. It only happens with Compiz running. Metacity seems to work just fine with 3d effects turned off. With Compiz running alt+f4 will close the window with no problem.

Texstar,
No I didn't install nothing outside of the repos, I would never do that, I did an update last night, and this morning I have no buttons. So I'm not sure why it happened, I just wonder why it happened. I changed to a different theme and nothing.

I have the same problem, running a fully updated Zen Mini. I'm using Compiz and also tried changing themes, which didn't work. As a temporary fix I've downgraded to Metacity version 2.30-1pclos2010, once I logged out then back in the buttons returned. I can only assume something's changed in the newer Metacity package (2.34.0-1pclos2011).

Running a now fully-updated Zen with current Metacity package, not using Compiz, everything good here.
This aggression will not stand man.
