[SOLVED] HP Pavillion dm4 Video Problems
« on: April 05, 2011, 10:15:17 AM »
So I finally got around to installing PCLOS on my new laptop  ;D

The thing is though... KDE desktop effects will not enable.

The error given is:

Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.

Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type.

lspci gives me this:

that list doesn't say what video card or video card driver you have there

can you give us the model of the machine to search for it?

there must be more numbers on that model number, specifying ram, hard disk, size of screen, cards and video card, also cpu(if it is a i3 with a gma integrated or not)

remember to provide as much info as possible

i found 28 matches on hp website, that means 28 variations of hp pavillion dm4 with multiple differences

check under the laptop, check serial number, more precise info

there should be a info somewhere saying hp pavilion dm4-1000 or 1100 or 1200, for each there is 10 submodels

My apologies... got to get back to remembering how to properly post on these forum things... :p

Here is a link to the web page detailing all of the specs of my laptop.

For graphics it just says Intel HD Graphics.

It does seem the Intel Core ix chips can sometimes cause a few issues with graphics.

Could try going to:

Configure Your Desktop >> Workspace Appearance & Behaviour  >> Desktop Effects >> All Effects

and removing all but one of the effects and try enabling Effects.  If it works try adding some back one at a time.

If you want some effect Compiz may be another option
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

Worked like a charm.

Had to reconfigure my xorg for it to take effect.
