Updated E17 Vs firefox 4 gnome .gvfs

IHi, I installed and used synaptic to fully update an E17 pclos, rebooted, installed firefox, and a dozen other apps.
Firefox failed to start, complained about no permissions for .gvfs

Found a topic from june 2010 in the forum here saying edit

/etc/udev/rules.d/99-fuse.rules   which now reads:

#KERNEL=="fuse", MODE="0666",OWNER="root",GROUP="fuse"
KERNEL=="fuse", MODE="0755",OWNER="root",GROUP="fuse"

Now when I start firefox (and audacity) I get this error:

Could not create gnome accelerators directory `/home/username/.gnome2/accels': Permission denied

Starting firefox as root, I get this error:

GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2270:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)
Aborted

Inkscape, scribus, brasero, xine, and others started normally, but when I quit xine, there was a massive crash,
amid short audible disk activity (case is open for now) and just a black screen with a -  in the upper left corner.
Power down, start up again...

Any hints are greatly appreciated. Cheers

Change the fuse rules back to 0666 the .gvfs warning in synaptic doesn't harm.
Concerning firefox: remove .gvfs directory and rename .firefox directory in your ~, restart X (hold Ctrl + Alt and hit Backspace twice) and relogin.
Try to lauch firefox again. If it helps firefox will start with clean config but you can import your bookmarks from the old (renamed) directory. Then setup a firefox sync account first then start doing your own setup and reinstall addons etc.. The firefox sync comes handy when you ever have to restart with a fresh config again.

Hi, thanks for helping. Firefox would not start with the 0666 settings. After the change to 0755, it gives a different error, but still would not start. Iĺl try your instructions with both settings. Cheers.

Edit:
A catch22, you don get a .firefox folder until you first run firefox. After deleting .gvfs, firefox still won start, so Iĺl see if I have a .mozilla
folder on a usbstick install, so I have a folder to rename.

I would also suggest to check the ownership of the files under /home/user directory. ie : "/home/username/.gnome2/accels': Permission denied"

All files under /home/user must belong to "user.user". For the .gvfs message I agree it does not harm, however it's annoying to see this message, and leaving the fuse rule to avoid it does not harm either. Mine has still the 0755 permissions:

One more thing I would suggest is to note on which repository the update has been done, and change repository, reload, then remove any app that does not work, and reinstall it from another repos.

Hi, this is a brand new install, with all defaults, all the /home/user .folders are user, user, with user r-w  >except for
.gnome2  this is root, root, so something is wrong with the defaults, or one the synaptic installer results, but there is only an empty
evince folder in .gnome2   Iĺl change these permissions...okay, the evince and .gnome2 are now user, user, and firefox has
started...could evince being updated by synaptic change the permissions, or perhaps some other app or their dependencies?

These are the apps I installed after the full update

OK, before the latest permissions change, xine crashed instantly when closing, now it crashes
instantly when trying to start it.

libxine1 lists these dependencies when using synaptic to
remove it:

emodules ecomorph ecomp elemnetary emotion enlil ethumb python-elementary python-emotion python-ethumb

  (and yes, it is already April 2 here    )  and just for good measure, the gui for mplayer fails to load,
although it is shown as installed, in synaptic.

Hi, xine is the command in /usr/bin, to play audio/video files, or launch the gui, in synaptic itś xine-ui.
I always download the .iso files here, in this case it is

The jaist.ac.jp repo is where the full update originated, and after changing permissions on
.gnome2, and the empty evince folder, from root to user, firefox starts OK

The smplayer gui does work, and if I select a media file from pcmanfm, and choose mplayer to open it,
the standard gui does open and function. Strange behavior from very old established players, years and many
distros have passed without any such problems from them.

Here the gui for mplayer loads from the menus without any problem. I can't test a video as for the present time I don't have any in that machine.

I suggest you look at the desktop file that launches it, and which is with it's other fellows desktop files under /usr/share/applications. Do you see this if you type the same commands as theses ones ? →

Thanks again for more details! I dug around in the mplayer manpage, and it seems you must now use

mplayer -gui    to start the player with its default interface.

Firefox is working, as noted above, but Iḿ concerned about the permissions of the .gnome2 folder
being root,root on a fully updated virgin new install. If only because firefox is an important app for
newcomers to linux, who might easily do an about-face if it did not work out of the box.

I will mark this as solved later in the week, if the moderators so desire.

You have done well in coming ask about theses problems. I'm sure if smurflover finds something to fix, he will as soon as possible. He has done a great job since he started taking care of this E17, as it's not so easy to deal with a desktop that is still in development, while users are looking forward to get it with impatience.

Just one question : on this new install, before or after the full update, what program or programs have you launched with the root permissions ?

Set the permissions the .gnome2 back to the user, you cand do that from terminal as root:

There's is no .gnome2 in /etc/skel on the light so must have been created by a program running as root.

PS if you want firefox as default browser change the command in your .bashrc (in ~)

Hi, the only things I ran as root were synaptic, to perform the initial system update, and firefox, and I checked, it does not create that .gnome2 directory, but does give an error:
