Webkit browser slow to launch
« on: April 02, 2011, 03:42:58 AM »
I have been playing with the webkit based PCLinuxOS Hammer browser and noticed that between app launch and connect to internet/home page appearing is a lag of 11 seconds.  Upon testing I then discovered that the same lag happens with other webkit based browsers Jumanji and Midori.  No such problem with Firefox or Chromium.  Once the home page is loaded everything runs OK - it's just that first load.
I run Openbox on a 3.0ghz P4.  Is there something missing from my system that I'm not aware of?

Do you need more testers?

Your system is not the problem.
Webkit has a few problems with some sites and is really fast on others.  They're working on it but it's still a little buggy.
Have you tried starting up with a different home page?

Dang, everytime I'm about to post a reply I get a warning about another post!!

uncleV,
Um, don't know, although I guess it wouldn't hurt - especially if the problem could be replicated.  But check out the link Neal has just posted.

ongoto,
I have set the home page to all my browsers to Google, although Hammer was originally the PCLinuxOS site.  Same result.  Interesting though, changing the home page to various sites gives different times - none more than eleven seconds, some down to six.  Damn, now Jumanji is down to six seconds - wasn't that yesterday!  Google has always been a funny one around here - I don't get it.  However Chromium and Firefox are almost instant in presenting a home page so it seems to still be webkit based.

AS far as I think my PCLOS is iron-hard and stable - so far I could test that new PCLOS browser.
And I won't cry if something goes crasy - I'll find that here. :D

Taco.22,

The difference in startup to render is slower as Hammer is using webkit without any 'assistance'

Firefox (geko based) chromium (wekit) and Opera. All use different ways to spead up initial render times

These include pipelining, prefetching,on the fly compression, dnsprefetching and other 'cheats' the pay off is in system resources and the sheer processing powerthe use

Once we manage to get a working .Dotfile for configuration we will be able to see what passing some arguments to this willdo

Ah, now that was something I missed - Chromium is webkit.  Should have known that!  That makes things a bit different.  I'll do some digging on the rendering side of things.

Hammer under LXDE at 10 y.o. machine and some limited Internet transfer speed: loads here PCLinuxOS home page for about a second.
Edit: Works faster than Chromium. Is it normal that I can reach only PCLOS internet pages?

Some Terminal output:
Quote
[uncleV@localhost Hammer]$ ./PCLinuxOS_Hammer.py-0.0.1.2
./PCLinuxOS_Hammer.py-0.0.1.2:196: Warning: g_object_set_qdata: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
  new_tab_number = self.append_page(scrolled_window, label)
** Message: console message:  @0: Unable to post message to http://googleads.g.doubleclick.net. Recipient has origin http://www.pclinuxos.com.
...
...
(the message repeats several times)

I'll try tonight at home at a better machine and Internet.
