Those are sure enough boot partitions.   ;D

... this should comply with the definition of power user!  :o

Gene tries, and isn't a bit worried about getting his hands dirty.. Note those kernels are mostly home rolled. :D

Power user?  Nah, just an old hand who is used to building his own kernels.

O-P:
grub> find /boot/grub/stage2
 (hd0,7)
 (hd1,7)

grub> find /grub/stage2
 (hd0,0)
 (hd1,0)
 (hd2,0)

This latter makes far more sense.

Next?

Thanks o-p, cheers, Gene

Next is to either add a boot link, so the boot partition shows with the first command, or just remember to not use the first command when wishing to install grub from the boot partition.

I have grub installed in the MBR of each of my drives, so they are all independent of the others, when I choose them to be, with root (hd0,0) used with setup (hd0), root (hd1,0) used with setup (hd1), etc using the grub native install method. I also have grub installed to each of the respective boot sectors of each OS / partition, so I can also chainload if I wish.

You seem to be ready to install grub to the MBR of the new hard drive now, so go for it. ;D

From the LiveCD boot, or from a root grub shell right now? It seems that
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0,0)

ought to work just as well from this boot.

Thanks o-p, cheers, Gene

You still need grub in the MBR if you intend to use that drive as the boot drive.

grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)

I missfired, maybe.  When that didn't work, I rebooted to the cd and setup (hd0,0) and setup (hd1,0),
so I just now did a setup (hd0)

It did boot as far as the usb scan, and hung on one of my FTDI usb hubs, at least a minute, so I 3 fingered it and I am back on the slow drive now.  But before I reboot again, I am going to compare the initrd's, as that hub has never given me any trouble booting past it before.

Yeah, the initrd was about 200k short, recopied it.

This is a SWAG game in choosing the drive to boot from as there is no way to tell, from the bios output, which drive is which.  But with a good initrd, maybe it will fly this time.

Back after yet another reboot.

Thanks o-p, Cheers, Gene

Version 1701, the latest from ASUS for an M2N-SLI Deluxe board, although its a couple of years long in the tooth now.

Offline for the rest of the day, I have had to wipe sda and re-install 4 times now before it would reboot.  I finally got that done about 9 pm, and have been updating 651 packages and retrieving my data, about 60Gib but mc had a deadlock while copying /usr/src just now and I had to use the reset button to reboot.  I am not yet collecting email and I expect my mailbox's are filling up, but I'll need to retrieve my /etc/rc.d/rc.local from the other drive to get that sorted.

And I'm bushed, I climbed a hill about 20 feet high while one install was chugging along and wrapped a log chain around a log of Cherry about 15 feet long and drug it back around the block, but when I went to make shorter pieces, my electric chain saw let out a terrible stink and signed off.  So a neighbor brought down his 4 wheeler and we got that out of the way for the night.  There is another 60 feet or so in another log I need to recover too.  That chain saw cut up 3 50 foot pines the wind took down last summer, so it doesn't owe me a thing considering I had $60 in it.  I don't think my GMC can pull the bigger one, the GMC only weights 7000 lbs, 4wd of course.  So it will have to come off the hill in smaller lengths.  No way to safely get a front end loader in there, too steep.

But I recovered the Mail subdir for me, and the .kde4 subdir, and its mostly working, so I'll attack the fetchmail/procmail that isn't running in the morning.

Basically I just wanted to let you know I hadn't fallen over, yet...  At least nobody has called the undertaker.  But 4 installs do take time.  Not to mention the frustration factor. :-(

Cheers & have a good night, whats left of it, Gene

No email yet, although there are about 500 msgs in in the spool file.

Akonadi is being a problem child, here is a start log that failed.

Test 5:  ERROR
--------

MySQL server log contains errors.
Details: The MySQL server error log file &apos;<a href='/home/gene/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/mysql.err'>/home/gene/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/mysql.err[/url]&apos; contains errors.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Actually that's just the first error and that's probably 30k just for this

Whats the best SWAG here?  I have had synaptic re-install akonadi, no diff.  And I get lost in 'database'ish stuff.

htop says there are about 10% of the usual mysql instances running.  Only 2, so I killed them, but when as root, I did a service mysql restart, it wasn't found, so syntaptic is re-installing that whole kit.  Didn't help. Humm, mysqld wasn't running, but is now.  That shortened the akonadi startup log but it still fails to start

This could be because you hit a bug. It is also possible that this binary
or one of the libraries it was linked against is corrupt, improperly built,
or misconfigured. This error can also be caused by malfunctioning hardware.
We will try our best to scrape up some info that will hopefully help diagnose
the problem, but since we have already crashed, something is definitely wrong
and this may fail.

key_buffer_size=8384512
read_buffer_size=131072
max_used_connections=2
max_threads=256
threads_connected=2
It is possible that mysqld could use up to
key_buffer_size + (read_buffer_size + sort_buffer_size)*max_threads = 566893 K
bytes of memory
Hope that's ok; if not, decrease some variables in the equation.

Thread pointer: 0x9cdcd10
Attempting backtrace. You can use the following information to find out
where mysqld died. If you see no messages after this, something went
terribly wrong...
stack_bottom = 0xb704836c thread_stack 0x30000
/usr/sbin/mysqld(my_print_stacktrace+0x29) [0x84a0f29]

/lib/i686/libc.so.6(abort+0x17e) [0x4970ddbe]
/usr/sbin/mysqld() [0x839f1d0]

Trying to get some variables.
Some pointers may be invalid and cause the dump to abort.
Query (0xac904538): Can't read from address 0xac904538: Invalid argument.
Connection ID (thread ID): 2
Status: NOT_KILLED

I need a magic twanger to help me see the trees in all this forest.

Thanks & Cheers, Gene

what you can see from the above log is that a (mysql) InnoDB table is corrupted
then there is a link about where to look for help.

I'm very sorry but I really can't provide more help on MySql topic.
(I'm glad to had switched to claws-mail when I saw akonadi/mysql behind Kmail).

Delete everything in '/home/gene/.local/share/akonadi folder. If you don't have anything of value in the database.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Now you know why Thunderbird is installed as the default email client instead of Kmail on PCLinuxOS proper.

wisely chosen!

I remember to have tried several email client, including Thunderbird, but in the end I choose claws-mail - a matter personal taste ...  ;)

Bingo!  At least its running & kmail is not greyed out although it was pulling mail from the local spool just fine. I assume I'll have to look up and re-enter all my ISP passwords, but that's doable, thank you very much.

FWIW, I did compare all files in that directory for size diffs with mc, and found none.  Me goes off scratching a slowly thinning (linux caused no doubt) head of hair.

Thanks, you da man!

One last problem, I am getting msgs from synaptic that it cannot download all the files from the pass server, which leaves me without the apache stuff.  So my web page is offline.

Is this temporary or what?
