Intel i810 and desktop effects
« on: April 01, 2011, 12:11:43 AM »
PCLOS 2010.12 upgraded on a Compaq CQ50 with Intel mobile4 i810 graphics card

Texstar was kind enough to explain that the i810 driver doesn't work well with desktop effects in KDE 4.6.1

Apologies, but why do these effects work on daughter's same laptop (we each have one) with pclos 2009.1 and also in Kanotix 2011
 (w/ 2.6.38rc6 kernel) LiveCD.

Sorry for being so dense but is it that the driver is not in the 2.6.33.7 kernel being used in pclos 2010.12 and is there a way to make it work?

Limited desktop effects are available as described in my thread here -->http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,89168.0.html

Thanks

The problem is with the effects added lately, namely "blur". KDE blames Intel for their bad drivers, which I cannot verify, only work-around...

Disable "Blur" under Settings > Desktop Effects > All Effects and
Disable "Direct Rendering" under Settings > Dektop Effects > Extended.

May change the rendering engine if

Lemme see if I can find that thread where this has been discussed......

That should help. I'm using e.g. "really" wobbly windows and it works with no issues. Love it  ;D ;D

In PCLOS 2009.1 you won't have the current effects, so no problem. In Kanotix, maybe some effects that might cause trouble have been disabled.

Wait for the 2.6.38 Kernel to hit the repos, the we may try again if all is working. AFAIK Intel updated the drivers.

Yes, I did read about blur and as mentioned in the other thread I have enabled desktop effects and am using xrender (instead of openGL which hangs kwin), but unchecked everything and my unexpected hard logouts are gone away. Am adding effects one by one to see if I can crash kwin and surprisingly some effects are available, but wobbly, flip and desktop cube are NOT available. I guess the drivers have to do with being available for earlier kernels used in KDE3.5.x and then  were available in the 2.6.38.

Also you may be right about Kanotix. I did try desktop cube and wobbly which DOES work but not others which may not . . . good point.

Anyway it is not a showstopper and my brain already hurts searching for new ways to do old things. Just hope that future versions of KDE4.X do not break stuff.

Thanks
