Can't install any new kernels [Workaround - not solved]

In a terminal enter uname -r What kernel is reported from this?

2.6.33.5-pclos1.bfs

Starting synaptic from a terminal only gave gtk errors, nothing about the failed installation.

Running apt-get install did produce and error that gave me a strategy that appears to have worked. I'll report back if it doesn't. If it does I'll mark solved.

I did two things, not sure which made it go through - Ran update sources list - then in addition to a new kernel, I selected to re-install mkinitrd.

try to check if mkinitrd is actually installed, look like no...
then install mkinitrd, current version is mkinitrd-6.0.93-7pclos2010
and finally try again to upgrade the kernel.

Ok, 2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs is installed. I'll try a couple of more later on.

Just to clarify, my sources.list was up to date, but I hoped that running the program may fix the apt database somehow. Also, mkinitrd was obviously installed, and if it was needed to be run, it could have been run from a terminal. But, just in case I was missing any details, I assumed that the install script would get it right.

Did you preface the attempt to install the kernel with apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade?

No, but I had just reloaded in Synaptic. It worked, I got a new kernel.
