cups-pdf with MIA PDF Files [sort-of solved]
« on: March 27, 2011, 11:26:15 PM »
Hi All,

Wondering if someone knows where cups-pdf is "saving" the files . . .

I have used Cups-pdf in the past.  Recently I tried to print a topic (on this forum) to PDF for reference.  In firefox 4.0 and Seamoney I can Print to PDF, document is created, and ....  it is nowhere to be found.  I tried to reinstall cups-pdf, I have checked localhost:631 to ensure it is still installed, I ran "updatedb" and locate commands . . .   the file is just not anywhere on my system.  I even tried printing a test page from Cups admisistrator in localhost:631.  I am out of ideas to check so I am posting my question here.

Does anyone know what is going on?  I know when I initially installed PClinux OS 2010 KDE cups-pdf worked like a champ.  I have not used it for a while, but I know some of the updates have definitely effected this program.

I saw in another thread cups-pdf was printing multiple pages.  Has this program gone downhill that bad?  Any help will be appreciated.

I don't use cubs pdf but I found "save to pdf" in chromium excellent.  Maybe there is an Add-On like that for your favourite browser.

I use it fairly often, a few things to check althought you seem to have it sorted.

you set up a cups printer?

any jobs stuck in the queue?  example:

http://imgur.com/eJId3

then the output location is set in etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf. I made a PDF directory in home so I edited as

##  CUPS-PDF output directory
##  special qualifiers:
##     ${HOME} will be expanded to the user's home directory
##     ${USER} will be expanded to the user name
##  Add for Fedora (~/.config/user-dirs.dirs)
##     ${DESKTOP} will be expanded to the user's desktop directory
##  in case it is an NFS export make sure it is exported without
##  root_squash!
### Default: /var/spool/cups-pdf/${USER}

#Out /var/spool/cups-pdf/${USER}
#Out ${DESKTOP}

Out ${HOME}/PDF

using pclos2010 updated and cups-pdf 2.5.0 which seems to be the latest in the repo.

If the other solutions don't pan out you could install recoll (in Synaptic) and that will do a thorough index of your system which you can then search.

rich2005.
I edited the cups-pdf.conf file and created the "PDF" directory in my home directory, did not work even after restarting cups.  Cups is installed, and yes it supposedly did print, I don't get it (the program that is, just to be safe I will be specific).

menotu.
I installed recoll, was unable to find any of the (about 10) pdf prints I made.  I love this tool!  I used locate because I was familiar with it's use.  last GUI search I used was Beagle.

longtom.
While I do not like chromium (has issues saving images, such as my check images from my bank) . . .  I did however find a plugin for Firefox (running 4.0 out of the repos) that does work.  i used "Save as PDF 1.5" Firefox Add-on.

hopefully a fix will come down the pipelines eventually, but for now Firefox has a very simple extension.

Thank you all for taking time any replying with great ideas.

What is interesting is that my desktop also running PCLOS 2010 KDE (fully updated) has the same issue.  It seems cups-pdf does not execute it's only function on either computer.  As a side note they both print to my Brother HL-5240 just fine.  At least I know it is not cups itself.

Here is a snippet from my cups-pdf.conf changing the print directory to /home/myhome/Documents/cupspdf and it works for me everytime.

### Key: Out
##  CUPS-PDF output directory
##  special qualifiers:
##     ${HOME} will be expanded to the user's home directory
##     ${USER} will be expanded to the user name
##  Add for Fedora (~/.config/user-dirs.dirs)

##  root_squash!
### Default: /var/spool/cups-pdf/${USER}

#Out /var/spool/cups-pdf/${USER}
Out ${HOME}/Documents/cupspdf

thanx all.  cups-pdf just does not work anymore.  I have used it in Fedora (12 I think) opensuse (10.3 to 11.3) and before the latest KDE update (I only know on the fresh install of PCLOS 2010 KDE, I can not pin point exactly when it stopped functioning).

Creating ~/home/roadrunner/Documents/cupspdf or ~/home/roadrunner/PDF with the respective edit in cups-pdf.conf; the program does not actually save any files anymore, but it pretends to.

I have given up on both my machines and installed the firefox plugin.  Something is not Kosher with cups-pdf anymore on both my laptop and Desktop.  Oh well...

Maybe this is just a typo, but...
The "~" (tilde) character get "expanded" to the user's home directory, so you're stating these directories are located at:
/home/roadrunner/home/roadrunner/Documents/cupspdf
and
/home/roadrunner/home/roadrunner/PDF
(assuming /home/roadrunner/ is your home directory... :-\)

If that is, indeed, the case, is there a mis-match with your configuration file?

I am conscious that this thread is not active now, but I just want to report that I had a similar problem trying to print with Cups-PDF and I solved it creating a folder named PDF in the home directory and editing etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf as suggested in the quoted post. My .pdf files now appear in the PDF folder. I colored in red the changes I made in cups-pdf.conf. I hope this result will be useful for some other user in the future. Thank you.
