Just a final note after some testing .......

a whole range of audio apps playing different audio files work without problems ......

SMPlayer
Bangarang
Whaah MP
Kaffeine
KMPlayer
Clementine

......  and VLC gives me scratchy sound.

That is for another day to sort out .....  only put it here in case someone is interested  ;)

Have you tried to adjust the audio playback options in the VLC preference menu? I changed my from Default to Pulse Audio.

Tex

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Yes I did try that ....  with no effect ....  but I did not reboot between ......  I will look at this again after I catch up on some things .....  I am so happy to have my sound system back in order that I have not yet been bothered by VLC not performing --- and it was my fav app for audio and video.

If I find a setting to correct it I will post it.

regards.

The Kmix mixer is not showing any controls, and none are presented when trying to select some through the settings.

I disabled Pulse again, and rebooted.
Then all the mixer controls showed in Kmix.

Re-enabling Pulse caused the controls to disappear again.

So it seems I have scratchy sound with VLC and no controls in Kmix mixer (or Alsamixer of course).

I will leave it for tonight ....

regards.

Delay and the Spatializer, be sure they're off.
Can't figure out the settings, but they crackle and scratch
and so forth.

Well here is an even stranger addition to the info about what is happening here ....

As it is almost 1am I am using wireless headphones and decided to try VLC again and then make adjustments to the settings, to see if there is any difference.

It plays perfectly into the headphones and plays scratchy into the speakers.
No other app plays scratchy into either ......

......  maybe there is some pre-amp setting or such for VLC .......  wondering if it could be overloading the input to the on board amp on the sound card ......  grabbing at straws now ......

No doubt there is probably an advanced setting in the "ALL" settings category.   If some
default setting is set at over 100% it's going to distort.   I'm checking out Totem
tonight for audio and video, there's practically no settings at all.

A interesting article here:  http://fitzcarraldoblog.wordpress.com/2011/03/28/nostalgia-for-those-alsa-mixer-channels-that-kmix-and-gnome-volume-control-used-to-have/

JohnW

Just gave it a try. Thanx for the link.

But that part

export KMIX_PULSEAUDIO_DISABLE=1 && kmix

If you want to make this permanent then add KMIX_PULSEAUDIO_DISABLE=1 to the file /etc/conf.d/alsasound

I could not verify  ???

Is that that you mean thread "solved"? In other words one can't use Kmix and PulseAudio together?

No, my original problem is solved ......  I now have them working together again ......  have been using them together for over a year IIRC.
There is still a communications problem between the two ......  but I am not sure how much of that is design and how much is a bug in this install.
I do not have any control sliders available in Kmix now, but at least Kmix is not using up 50% of my CPU and hogging large amounts of memory --- that is solved.

With regard to the supplementary problem of scratchy sound in VLC only I seem to have found a solution.

I have only implemented this and after a reboot VLC seems to be behaving itself.

I uninstalled

vlc-plugin-pulse

which also removed

phonon-vlc

I have not done a cold boot yet, but VLC is showing in the PA Vol Ctrl and the output device (sink) is selectable as normal.
The scratchy sound has disappeared.

Is it possible that the later versions of VLC do not require the PA plugins, and having them installed was what was causing the problem?  Previously those plugins were necessary to have VLC play nicely with PA.
