Need OS advice.
« on: March 23, 2011, 07:25:00 AM »
Good morning all!

I just converted to PCLOS and now would like to put this great OS on my other computers, but need help figuring out which version.

I have a Dell Latitude c610 with 384 megs of ram and a 18 gig hard drive. The only thing I will do with this is occasional web surfing and I need to put just one windows app on it. Which version would you think would work best for me? I only have $25 buck in this laptop and don't want to put anymore ram in it. I just drag it to the racetrack where I race R/C cars. Here is the link to the windows app I need on it.

Thanks for the help!

One of the lighter versions would be fine for you - LXDE-Mini, MiniMe, Zen-Mini, XFCE-Mini or Openbox-Mini.

As to whether your app will run in wine, I do not know. Test and see is all I can say.

I'd go with LXDE on it.. running it right now on 1.6 with 256 ram ..runs fast and stable.. but you might want to use Chromium browser instead of Firefox..

Yeah, I agrtee, LXDE or XFCE.  both a re lightweight and run quite fast.

The thing I do is to install KDE.  Then I add the following DEs:  Gnome, E17, LXDE, and XFCE.  Then, I get to pick and choose.  But, it does require some more HD space.

With the specs racerrandy posted, there would not be enough resources to do it that way, I believe. Best to start with one of the minis. LXDE would be my choice, naturally, but any of them would do.

Looks like the general consensus voted for LXDE so that's what I will try!  :)

Thanks for the help and I will let you all know how it works out.

Randy,
Make sure to start with the Mini version of LXDE. It has fewer apps installed by default and should be just a bit "lighter" on your hardware. :)

Ok, my live cd burning didn't go well.

I downloaded the lxde-mini iso and saved it to my documents.  When I put the cd in, k3b came up and give me the option burn the iso which I did. After I put the cd in my other laptop and asked it to check the media it FAILED.

Where did I go wrong? I admit I have always loaded the distro's I have tried from disc I get from Linux magazines and never burned the iso before. OR I should say I have not been successful.

Walk me through this please, I hate being a 44 year old NEWB!

1: Download the .ISO
2: Check to be sure the md5sum matches (actually, if you are using k3b, it does this before the burn)
3: slow down the burn speed to the lowest setting that your burner will accept.
4: There is a way to check the md5sum after the burn on the CD but I am not sure/don't remimber how.
5: If all else fails, use different media. I have found problems with some aaaachuewFuji, and Luck with others ,,coughMemorex.

Ok, more success but not completely.

I picked up some new cd-r discs and burned a new live cd. This time when I did the media check it passed but after draklive installer comes up I can't get passed where it configures the grub. It wants to know if I want to add of modify anything, I clicked finish then it just sits and goes blank.

How long? Depending on the size of your hard drive, this can take some time. I'm not saying you don't have a problem, just thinking out loud.
If it takes an hour, I would assume you have a problem.

Sounds like you probably had a grub2 beta software on there at some point and it wrote some trash to the mbr and pclinuxos is having a hard time trying to find the proper entry point. Does anyone know of a good utility to totally clean the harddrives mbr?
