<Found, thanks, Tex>Need Ussage Meter
« on: March 22, 2011, 07:41:38 PM »
With complaints from users that AT&T metering is off by tens of gigabytes per day I'm trying to remember the usage meter I downloaded in the past from Synaptic but can't remember it and I guess I'm using the wrong search terms. Can someone help?

Gkrellm can give you that data by the day, week or month.

Thanks I installed it but it seemed a lot more complicated then what I had before. What I had just set in the bottom tray and I could click on it for just that info.

If you use KDE4 then knemo is a good tool to monitor your traffic. It has billing cycles and off-peak configuration utility. There is another program called vnstat that also will do it but I don't have much experience in setting it up.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Move from AT&T to a decent provider?
There is no shame in saying "I don't know".

vnstat is OK. It's a command-line tool that works fine and gives all the required info, but in quite a basic format. I would recommend it, though, because of its simplicity.

Set up is as simple as installing it from Synaptic and running it, whereupon it creates a small database to store the info and set itself up to run when the the machine starts up. It couldn't be simpler.

The GUI that is also available is really not much good. It has a dependency on Firefox (!) and uses FF whether or not it is your default browser and really just presents exactly the same textual info as the command line version, but on a web page.

I've also seen a php version of vnstat on another distro that is excellent, but it's not in the PCLOS repository.

I don't know if you are from America, but government sponsored monopolies is what we basically have to deal with.  I know it sounds easy, but in my area there is only two choices. Time Warner & AT&T. But Time Warner cost twice as much for the same speed, requires a contract, and throttles traffic. So which evil do we go with?

Tex is right, I have used this tool for years just to see how much bandwidth I use on my network. I am already at a couple TB's this year alone.

If you are like me, you have several computers on your network. My main desktop is also my media server. So the outgoing bandwidth on that machine is through the roof because of the movies I stream to my PS3, xbox, and HTPC. I also download tons of movies & music (etree is awesome!) on my laptop that I then transfer to my desktop. So now the download count is off on the main desktop.

I need to find a way to just count the internet traffic and not the home network traffic. If I had a PC converted to a router then it would be easy. But I don't. So I need to look around for some ideas.

As explained by others limited choices and AT&T dry loop is the cheapest.

Sometimes we initially need to pay some more to win in the end. A limited choice is still having a choice. AT&T wont let you have one after rooting up the 'limited" competition.

No, I'm Australian. Didn't realise choice was so limited over there.

The only to other choices would be Comcast Cable or Clear wireless. You can't get cable internet without also paying for at least basic cable TV. I am happy with broadcast TV which I get free by antenna plus some older TV shows from the internet. What I would have get with basic cable TV is the same plus stuff I'd never watch. Then there is throttling and caps on cable TV plus sometimes too many people per node slowing it down. Wireless raises a whole host of ifs and I'm pretty sure somewhere burred in the contract there is an extra charge for what they consider unreasonable usage.

Oh yes contract. No contract with dry loop DSL but contracts with cable and wireless. Just in case you aren't familiar with the term dry loop it means a phone line with no phone service so I only pay for internet, nothing else.
