general questions about netbooks
« on: March 21, 2011, 11:21:04 PM »
i was using my netbook on win xp and noticed that it gets as hot as on linux, around 50°C

i was blaming compiz but no, that is not the reason

at what temperature does your netbook(s) run?

i have hit this thing so hard, i can't apply warranty if i wanted, 3 or 4" feet falls made me remember why i like so much toshiba

how strong/resistant is your netbook?

Usually about 150 degrees the fan goes on for a few minutes, and that is before and
after a manufacturers' bios upgrade for thermal control was installed.   I've never
dropped it but I can see where ASUS is slightly heavier plastic than Acer for example.
Which is why I'll try to replace with an ASUS.   Mine has an SSD so a fall shouldn't
really hurt if the outer plastic is intact.

I used to play chess and every single time I made a move the fan would go on, other
programs were OK.   Probably the reason for the bios upgrade.    I asked ASUS about
it and they said if you use the computer for a few hours the fan goes on, so what.

Many programs run, especially on XP, auto upgrades, scheduled tasks, toolbars, and so forth
and with high priority.   Turning them ALL off results in faster and cooler operation.

I recently reinstalled XP with no Microsoft hotfix's or security upgrades of any kind, just
Avast Virus for that stuff and it is really running OK.   Acceptable, you know.

Check with the manufacturer if you think you're running hot, several have had to.   This
netbook might work forever, and replacement screens, keyboards, power supplies, SSD
upgrades, all kinds of stuff are available from ASUS.

Now I run PCLinuxOS from a 16GB flash drive.  Only one, possibly two programs I wish I
had, comparably running equally with the other OS's out there.

Have a good one,

FF

p.s   I usually like to keep my responses to one or two short paragraphs, sorry.

Since my netbook is too small to fit comfortably on my knees and I need a platform anyway, I bought a cooling pad with two fans that run off a USB port. Ten dollars US, I have someplace to rest my wrists and a cooled CPU.
Fair warning: I am a whiny, selfish brat who should be denied access to 2010, per a moderator. Box: Acer Aspire One 110-xxxx model. XP wiped (and flushed), 2010 gnome (despite mod) grafted onto 8g flash HD via livecd.

I love my eeepc. It runs around 71c under stress, and by stress I mean compiling software (it was my main machine for about 3 or 4 months until I built another desktop). I throw it in my bag and carry it everywhere and I have dropped it slept on top of it (forgot it was in my bed one night) and even sat on it when it was under my sweater in my chair.
