Can't install any new kernels [Workaround - not solved]
« on: March 21, 2011, 09:41:05 PM »
I have all of the newer kernels, test kernels, etc. on my laptop. But the desktop machine with LXDE won't install any kernels. I'm still on the kernel on the 2010.12 livecd. I mark to install either the 2.6.33.7 or the 2.6.37.x. They appear download, install and return to synaptic. When I try to close synaptic, I get a message, "Do want to quit without saving?" (or something like that). The kernels have 'not' been installed. Any ideas?

I have seen this, but dang if I can remember when or why. I don't think it was related to a kernel install though.

Do you get the same for any other software install?

Thanks for the reply. ;)

I don't have problems installing any other software and I am fully updated. (Even got firefox4!)

It's bothering me now that I can't remember when I saw this or what I did about it.  >:(

Sorry... I should know.

Are you sure it is not waiting on a "response" when you try to close synaptic?

I don't want it to bother you! ;) The standard kernel works just fine in this machine (everything works). I just was interested to see if there were any performance improvements.

Unless you have special RAM requirements (over 4g) or special hardware requirements (aka. something ain't working), I don't think there is any reason to use a differant kernel other than the one that is working.   ;)

As far as I know, the main differences in the kernels has to do with what hardware is included by default.

If you need specifics/opinions, fasten your seat-belt. I don't understand a bunch of it,, but there is a bunch!  ;D

It did download? Did you apply, apply?

I get this when selecting updates but not applying them.

You're not a newbie, so I guess you have done that.

Tried the CLI?
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

Thanks for asking. Yes, I did apply. I haven't checked to see what errors show up on the cli. I don't spend a lot of time on my wife's computer. She doesn't like anything changed (or broken ;)). But I insist on keeping it up to date, so that I can properly support it if something quits working. (Plus the new firefox makes this old machine fly!)

Did you get any other feedback from Synaptic? Is the Apply button green or grey? Have you checked in /var/cache/apt/archives to see if there is anything other than the lock file there? (You don't need to be root to look.)
Are you fully up to date?

Did you try a reboot and then install?

Looks exactly the same as if it downloaded and installed, until I close.

Is the Apply button green or grey?
No, all visual feedback was normal.

No, but I will look at it again tomorrow evening and let you know.

Yes!

Yes, I rebooted a couple of times, just in case the first one didn't stick. ;)

Try starting Synaptic from Terminal as normal user and look there for error output?

In a terminal enter uname -r What kernel is reported from this?

2.6.33.5-pclos1.bfs

Starting synaptic from a terminal only gave gtk errors, nothing about the failed installation.

Running apt-get install did produce and error that gave me a strategy that appears to have worked. I'll report back if it doesn't. If it does I'll mark solved.

[root@localhost suzie]# apt-get install kernel-2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  kernel-2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs kernel-devel-2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs

Need to get 0B/37.5MB of archives.
After unpacking 56.4MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
   mkinitrd is needed by kernel-2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs-1-1pclos2010.i586
E: Transaction set check failed

I did two things, not sure which made it go through - Ran update sources list - then in addition to a new kernel, I selected to re-install mkinitrd.
