In IceWM, changing the theme will change the wallpaper. Some themes have a selection of wallpapers to choose from. Otherwise, look in the hidden files in your /home for the file that 'governs' your theme and see if you can change your wallpaper there. (Sorry. Can't go into IceWM just now to check.)

My initial thoughts is that

A> is the box "start at boot" ticked during the configuration of the network "device"

B> If using Vbox try one ot the 'other' emulated ethernet connection types

I tend to use actual hardware as opposed to vbox (and have historically preferred qemu/bochs for cpu/vmachine emulation) - this probably explains why i haveso many laptops & towers

the only other thing I would uggest we do is uer the forum "code" tags and post the initial dmesg

A. yes, it's checked.
B. I was using bridged network which worked on 100% of other guests, I tried NAT with the same results. What's odd is the network connection indicator shows it's connected although I never get the pop-up Network is connected screen.

I'm not sure what the last sentence meant  ;D

LKJ,
Try this ---
Delete your internet connection. If more than one is shown, delete all.
Create a new connection.
Log out. Log in.

LOL

Let me rephrase and think about what I am typing lol ;)

The only other thing I would suggest we do is use the forum "code" tags and post the initial dmesg

ie after booting open xterm and type dmesg > dmesg.txt , to create a file that leaf pad can see,  then copy and paste the content of dmesg.txt to a forum reply using the tags for code ie [c0de] using an o instaed of a 0

EDIT:

also try what Neal has suggested - he normally speaks more sense than I do! lol

l ;D @ Neal

I deleted the connection, created a new one. restarted, same thing. the odd thing is, when I boot the network indicator says it's up, the meter indicates a connection. but when I try to launch a browser it can't connect until I reconfigure the connection using the same settings. what does seem to be different is when I first boot there is an address for DNS: when I mouse over the network indicator, however, after reconfiguring the connection the DNS: is blank but I am connected. obviously since I am typing to you guys  ;D

Hmm...... log out / log in, not restart.

Try using a different DNS server, like openDNS or google DNS.

okay, will do but I have it set just so you know to...
oops lol
Automatic IP (BOOTP/DHCP)
Get DNS servers fromDHCP
Start the connection at boot & Enable traffic accounting
and Network Hotplugging is checked...
maybe I need to configure it manually?

A new connection does not require a reboot, only a log out / log in.

Configure the DNS manually, yes.

okay, not sure what's up. I entered the dns manually. I used Google's dns 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4...
it works across log in and outs but not across reboots. beats me
