PCLinuxOS-Light (Iced Latte) Beta version available
« on: March 21, 2011, 04:22:21 PM »

I am very Glad to announce the first public (Beta-Test) release of PCLinuxOS-Light (Iced Latte) Edition

Whats this?

PCLinuxOS Light is the natural progression of the concept behind the WMii iso release, Scalability and usability as light as humanly possible.

Whats this mean?

PCLinuxOS-Light will always try to provide a base that provides all that you need to be productive, on any machine you install it on that falls within its minimum specifications require.

What are the minimum specifications?

As with the WMii iso the minimaum spec's I have repeatedly installed on are Pentium 2 with 112megs of RAM - I fully believe that it can be installed on lower specs although have yet been able to get the time to do so.

Whats the difference between this and the WMii iso?

Lots, PCLinuxOS-Light has been built from the ground-up from a truly minimal iso provided by etjr. It is not based on Zen-Mini as WMii iso was.
it also uses IceWM as the default - the other WM's are available at the GDM- login screen
Which desktop environment does it provide.

Like the WMii iso this is not a 'DE' release, I have chosen 3 of the finest windowmanagers in this release WMii, FluxBox and IceWM

As this is the beta release - the WMii is configured as per the WMii iso, Fluxbox is as per the repo install and IceWM shows the signs of being themed by  madman :)

Another big difference is that you can almost have a fully productive environment in run level 3 you can surf (with pictures in frame buffer) via w3m, read emails (alpine) use mc filemanager, write (using either mcedit or pico) and even watch youtube/other online and local video material (via mplayer in framebuffermode)

There is a slight change to the applications compared to the WMii iso.

GUI apps include

Archiving : Simpleburn, Xarchiver

Editor: Leafpad

File Tools: BleachBit and Thunar file manager

Graphics: Gpicview, Image Magick, Screenie, feh

Internet: Jumanji Browser, Sylpheed, Xchat
(note: please let me know whether Jumanji or Midori would be the better fit)

Office: Ted (word processor)
Software Center: Synaptic Package manager

Sound: see below Cli based apps

Video: Pymp (Mplayer frontend in Python), PCLinuxOS FLV player/converter

More Applications: PCC, Gparted, Ntfs config, Network center/Applet, get virtualbox, Xterm/Terminal, xlock.

Cli applications

Archiving : cdrkit, cdparanoia, dvd+rw-tools, gzip, bzip, tar, xz, cpio

Editor: mcedit (mc), pico(alpine), vim-minimal,

File Tools: mc, pilot(alpine), ddrescue, dd_rescue, fprmost, safecopy, rsync,

Graphics: feh, caca-utils, fbgrab

Internet: w3m, alpine, weechat (weeget enabled), newsbueter, mcabber, iftop, nmap, scapy, whois, netcat, kismet, wget, curl,

Office:  remind, wyrd. pico, bc,

Software Center: apt-get

Sound: abcde, alsamixer, aumix-text, cmus, vorbis-tools, normalize, mpg123,

Video: mplayer (via framebuffer)  ffmpeg

More Applications: screen, twin, pcc, Xterm, htop, statgrab-tools (saidar),infobash, mylivecd.

OK is there anything else I should know.

Yes, included is community member "ongoto" version of the installer draklive-install this I suggest that you read this http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,84951.0.html

you can even install from runlevel 3 using this great port to ncurses.

xterm is configured for 256 colours

Known issues

The wallpaper is out of date the passwords are- root=root and guest=guest

irssi has been replaced by weechat (not reflected in the wallpaper)

the Mod+F10 in WMii is not on the wall paper - this launches Ted processor

in run level 3 w3m does not 'play nice' with either screen or twin.

loads more for you to tell me

OK so wheres it at?

That's the size of it!

This release uses gzip as the compression to aid slower RAM, usins xz would reduce the iso considerably

Posting this using Jumanji while running Iced Latte live from a USB stick.

One, slightly negative comment first .......   it would be more assuring if the Desktop could be coloured .... mine comes up black which is reminiscent of a 'black screen'.

That said, it is fast, stable and functional for the little time I have spent with it.

I like it very very much!

I have not looked at any settings etc and the only thing noticable is that the delay before the repeat-key function is larger as I am used to with other PCLOS ISOs ........  or maybe I have that set myself here.

If all I can find to remark on is such triviliaties then that of itself says a lot about this ISO.

Lovely Jase!

As to your question about Jumanji/Midori ............  this is my first time trying Jumanji, while I have Midori on my main install and use it infrequently ......  I would say whichever is the smaller.  I have no problem using Jumanji.

Congrats again ......  I look forward to this getting to its final and being released to join the other PCLOS ISOs.

best regards.

EDIT:
My remark earlier was regarding the size being mentioned or not in the first post .............  did I miss it? ..............  if not then it would be useful information for those reading.

EDIT2
I would prefer Midori ..........  due to the immediate availability of the usual Back/Forward/Up etc navigation icons on the top of the page.

EDIT3:
Must admit to prferring Fluxbox  ;D   Easier to make adjustments it seems to me (not having used either until now); When I installed Midori it appeared in the Fluxbox menu but not the ICE menu. PCManFM seems to be easier to use also.

Regarding playing sound files ...  according to the menu, the FLV player is a sound player ...  but it is a video player for FLV files. There does not appear to be anything present that plays MP3 or other audio files.

End of first play with this ISO  ;D

I like it a lot  ;D

Hi,

Unfortunately I don't have time available for testing it immediatly, but I will sure see it when it's going to be a final, even if only to make a version localized to French.

Would someone show a few screenshots please ? :)

Just19,

Iso size added to download detail in first post, for a guide to jumanji browser checkout its man page it is strong on keybindings, its 'weak point' is its handling of ssl certs (its very much a 'common sense' browser, Midori is more mature, there is a browser "XXXterm" in the package suggests that falls between by being (almost) as light as Jumanji with cert handling.

as  for mp3 playback there is cmus which is very capable.

The defaults are very bare compared to coffeetime's post

as seen in this post http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,84951.msg741473.html#msg741473
