[ Resolved itself! ] Pidgin Problem with Gmail
« on: March 21, 2011, 05:04:55 AM »
I have been unable to authorise my IM in Pidgin this morning on my gmail account.

I have been able to access the account via the browser as usual, but Pidgin refuses to enable the account.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

I don't use Pidgin therefore not sure how the authorization is setup (i.e. if it needs setting up in both Pidgin and GMail)  but I did spot this one, thus I don't know whether it will help in your case Just19 ?

Thanks menotu, but that does not describe what I am seeing here ......  as I have no other services in use, just the Pidgin IM service.

I am able to use the services from a browser .....  such as IM and voice connection.

It seems thet Pidgin, from this morning, cannot get connected to the gmail account ...... "Not Authorised"

I have no changed anything in the account or in Pidgin, since yesterday, when it was working. It has been reliably working for a couple of years at least  :(

The only thing I can think of is that some setting in the Gmail account itself, is preventing Pidgin from accessing it.
Pidgin works OK today with Yahoo ......  so it is just a Gmail thing.

Is there some setting in the Gmail Account settings which might affect this?
I have not been into those settings for years, so have no idea what might be there.

Thanks.

regards.

Check your gmail settings to see if IMs are set to open in gmail's built-in IM only. That's the only thing I can think of at the moment.

One other thing came to mind is whether you're connecting using http or https as that may make a difference.

Sounds like it is something like that .......  where might i find that setting?

I am rather lost when looking at the Gmail settings etc ......  not having been in there for a very long time.

thanks

At the top right, there is an icon to the right of your account name. Clicking it will drop down a list of options. I forget which one it is you need, but you should be able to figure it out.

In trawling through the settings ......  geeze there are so many! .....  I came across something called Application Specific Password (or something like that), but it appears that is not required on my account as Thunderbird has no problems getting the mails from it. It is greyed out when I access that page, in any case.

This is puzzling .....

One other thing came to mind is whether you're connecting using http or https as that may make a difference.

From what I can see, there is no choice made about HTTP or HTTPS ......  but I may be looking in the wrong place  :(

HTTPS is used when opening gmail in a browser.

I tried setting up a second Gmail account (different name) in Pidgin, and get the same problem.

That would indicate to me that it is not the account but Pidgin that is at fault.

I will fire up another PC and see if I can use Pidgin on that to access either account.

....  will report .....

OK, here is the current situation .......

two PCs, both connected to the same router

Pidgin on both, and three different gmail accounts used

None of the three accounts can connect on either of the two PCs.

Now while I accept that some setting might have been inadvertantly changed on one of those accounts, there is no way that the same setting got changed on all three .....  particularly as I did not access those settings since last night when Pidgin was working.

The second PC test did not have Pidgin installed, so I just installed it ........  so no danger there that there is any correlation between the two installs.

All three accounts are accessible on both PCs using different browsers.

Both PCs are using Pidgin 2.7.11

Yahoo IM accounts are working.

I killed the connection from one of the PCs to the router and use a wireless dongle to access the net, which accesses using a different WAN IP address. Same story, so the router is not involved.

*******

So, in summary .......  Pidgin seems to be the only likely candidate at the moment, for the problem.

regards.

I dont use GMail + Pidgin anymore but I do use Pidgin as my main IM client and I still have my gmail account laying around somewhere. Will setup it just to confirm the problem (or not).

Hold on tight.

Works 100%. I added GMail account to pidgin. It connected ok. I added group for the GMail account. I added Jabber.org account as a buddy from GMail and then authorized it and had a nice chat with myself... Talking about mental problems huh? :D After all that I rebooted machine / and restarted pidgin couple of times. All is well. GMail connects each and every time.

 ;D ;D

Thanks Andy

Can you let me know what version of Pidgin you were using?

***

I tried different accounts on the PC, including root account, and no difference.

***

I have tried reinstalling Pidgin to no effect ......  but that would be similar to installing afresh on the other PC, so not unexpected.

***

Is it possible that Google set all accounts to refuse access from apps such as Pidgin?

I know I didn't  :(   I also know it was working before I shut down last night.

***

This situation is really puzzling .......
