time not updating SOLVED
« on: April 26, 2011, 09:06:55 AM »
Hi,

I am running PCLOS 2010.12 fully updated as a guest in vbox 4 on a Windows 7 host. There are no issues with connecting to the internet.
For some reason, time does not stay up to date. ntpd is running according to PCC -> System -> Manage System... and the Enable Network Time Protocol is checked with the North America|USA servers chosen in the Adjust Date and Time Settings window. There are no errors when closing the Adjust window.
Just this morning I had to adjust time because it was showing 6:20PM Sun, 24 Apr

Does anyone have a clue?

Thanks

Rick.

SOLUTION: Installed VBox Non-OSE 4.0.6 from their site to Windows 7, installed their guest additions on PCLOS. Time is good for 24 hours so far. Everything was working in the old setup except time. I'm a little anal about time or is it about time I was a little anal?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Which kernel are you running? Are the Guest Additions installed? Kernel 2.6.38 gives me trouble with the GA in VB 3.2.12, not sure how it runs in VB 4.

Could try running your localization manager and also checking the Locale and the Time settings in Configure Your Desktop (I occasionally find it worth setting them up in PCC and Configure Your Desktop )

PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.4; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.4.38bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Was running kernel 2.6.38.2 then changed back to original, 2.6.33.7 but the time problem is still there.

Open Synaptic (Software manager) and install virtualbox-guest-additions. This package was removed by the new kernel, but is needed for mouse integration, time synchronisation and video performance.

And if kjpetrie's suggestion does not work, I'd just setup NTP manually.  Guest O/S's are not entirely dependent on their host....
