Just for clarity: there is no Gnome kernel. Gnome is a desktop environment, as is KDE, LXDE, XFCE, etc. A kernel IS the operating system, but there are many versions of the Linux kernel. These desktop environments are programs that run on an operating system, such as Linux, BSD, etc.
