[SOLVED] WIFI Connection Dropped Often
« on: March 20, 2011, 12:46:11 PM »
I installed PCLOS Gnome 2010 yesterday. Before I was using PCLOS KDE 2007 with no problems. Now the netgear wifi connection is dropped after 5 minutes or so.I have to reconnect often. Why would this happen now when before I had a solid wifi connection? I never had to connect at boot up,now it's a must. In the wifi connection set up I have the same settings, and start up at boot is checked. Thanks

what is the signal strength of the connection? the lower the strength, the more frequent the disconnections will happen

different kernels performs differently. Try to update the kernel to the latest one and check if the problem is still there.

The same way you update your system. Open synaptic, search for "kernel" and install the one with the highest number(i think its 2.6.38.4). Restart your computer after you have install it and there will be a link on a boot up menu to the kernel you just installed, select it and boot up and use if for a while and see if the connection holds up.

Thanks. I went to admin center, and deleted the ethernet connection again, and reentered the wifi connection, did a restart. The connection started at boot up,and so far I'm 30 minutes without a lost connection.I'll update the kernel. The signal isn't the strongest, not the weakest either. This machine is about 50 ft from the router.

I spoke too soon ,the connection died again. I'd have to move the puter to try to update the kernel. The connection would die in the middle  of the update.

You can continue with the download on reconnect after the connection goes down, you dont need the connection to be up once all packages are downloaded. Its better to have a continuous connection when downloading packages to install/update but its not necessary.

I had the same problem though not after an update / new install.

Out of nowhere the wireless lan signal kept dropping every five minutes or so on both of my laptops (PCLOS 2010 KDE).

After I changed the wifi channel in my router everything was fine. Guess there was some interference with whatever. Two years ago I had problems of interference with the radio babysitter.

Did you get any new electronic devices / hardware since you did the new install.

Try changing the wifi channel, if it don't help you can go searching for software issues.
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

I had a similar problem some time ago and had to disable IPV6 in the network configuration.

I also used a LiveUSB I created on my work laptop and had to make sure that my wifi region was set to DE (I'm in Germany), otherwise connection wouldn't work at all.

Just a couple more ideas...

Good luck!

install kernel version 2.6.37.4-pclos1.bfs

did you try first using a different channel on your wifi network?

The Wifi problem seems to have resolved itself,I connected next to the router, returned the cpu to the location it was at and don't seem to have the disconnect problem now.

I don't seem to be able to locate Konsole in Gnome to check it's version. How do I open a Konsole window in Gnome?I tried in Applications, I looked in admin too :

kde calls it "konsole", gnome calls it "gnome terminal". Gnome terminal is on your list. Xterm(also on your list) will give you the same functionality.

why do you want to start up konsole/xterm/terminal/gnome terminal?(they are all the same)

In Gnome Terminal the command is
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/issuewhich will give you for example
Quote
[colin@localhost ~]$ cat /etc/issue
PCLinuxOS release 2010 (PCLinuxOS) for i586
Kernel 2.6.37.4-pclos1.bfs on a Dual-processor i686 / \l
[colin@localhost ~]$
which is the latest gnome kernel available in the repos!
