New Modem
« on: March 17, 2011, 04:18:13 PM »
Got a new Motorola Netopia modem today with my AT&T DSL service. I can get a browser to the internet but it will not let me update via synaptic or apt-get update. Any suggestions. I have tried looking at the security settings in the modem with no results. I do not have a firewall turned on. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Check the DNS settings in the router .....  your ISP likely has a couple they suggest you use.

I have a pass account the is barely two weeks old. I am very aware of the repo problems but I had already updated my source list. Everything worked fine till AT&T replace my modem. I don't have this problem from running a live CD.

I can get a browser to the internet

To be clear .......  does that mean that you can access the internet without hindrance using a browser?
You can access all sites you have tried?

What happens if you copy the URL from the entry in Synaptic for your chosen mirror?
Can you access the mirror through your browser?

If you can't access the mirror with the browser, then please try the URL from a different mirror and see if your browser will access that one.

Let us know what happens in each of the above cases.

regards.

Hi chast520,

Being true the above statement, out of any doubt your modem is working.

If you are able to navigate the internet, your modem can only be working right. This is probably a coincidence.

but it will not let me update via synaptic or apt-get update

This suggest something is not correct related to PCLinuxOS repos, therefore related to /etc/apt/sources.list..

This now is very confusing, because the repo's changes does not apply to PASS members ... It's not clear what you are doing.

There is something wrong btw your computer and the PASS server or with your access to the PASS server. Try using another repository and see if you cant connect there too.q

.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

A few weeks ago I remember that Texstar had to find a new home for the Pass server
and he mentioned that you may have to wait for your ISP to update their DNS records .
Could this be the problem ?

I became and just did a complete reinstall. Kept my /home intact. That seems to have fixed the problem. Next still curious why it happened.

To answer the question, yes i had complete access to the internet through the browser.

Also a weather app in kde 4.6.1 desktop couldnt update. Oh, I just not very patient.

Thanks for trying. Chast520
